I plant the kind of kiss that wouldn't wake a baby
On the self-same face that wouldn't let me sleep
And the street is singing with my feet
And dawn gives me a shadow I know to be taller

All down to you, dear
Everything has changed

My sorry name has made it to graffiti
I was looking for someone to complete me

Not anymore, dear
Everything has changed

And we made the moon our mirrorball
The streets, an empty stage
The city sirens violins
Everything has changed

So lift off love
Lift off love

We took the town to town last night
We kissed like we invented it
And now I know what every step is for
To lead me to your door

Know that while you sleep
Everything has changed

We made the moon our mirrorball
The streets, an empty stage
The city sirens violins
Everything has changed
Everything has changed
Everything has changed

So lift off love
Lift off love ''(down to you, dear)''
Lift off love ''(down to you, dear)''
Lift off love ''(down to you, dear)''
Lift off love ''(down to you, dear)''
Lift off love ''(down to you, dear)''

Someone needs to get THAT version of Mercy Street on RP. Actually make me like the song now! Oh here's a more direct link to Elbow's take on the song.

Elbow have covered mercy street. More information here. Wow.
This sure reminds me of Kate Bush's Cloudbusting.

I'm echoing others, I know, but this is far, far, far inferior to the original version.
I'm liking it.... {#Ask}

That is sooooooooooooooooo bad for the eyes...you should know better.

Hmmm. What to think. 9 for the song (SSK is one of the few albums I've bought in the past few years); 2 for Peter's delivery (does he even know what this song is about? Has he never been mind-blindingly, throat-clinched in love?); 6 for the orchestra, so I guess a 6 average
For elbow this is okay, but for PG, I dont like it!
7 Simply because I like PG and Elbow both equally, however I despise covers.... does make listening to RP a constant challenge... ;)
{#Think} The previous song ( Moody Blues - Om) made me think "this sounds 'Elbow-ish'. Then Bill plays a Peter Gabriel cover of an Elbow song.
Things that make ya' go hmmmmm.
i like peter gabriel....but this just isn't neccesary - please, please just play the elbow version...its so superior to this its not even funny
Peter Gabriel is really starting to grow on me....like a drug-resistant fungus.

For me this later stuff (especially this album) is pretty much consistently "sucko-barfo". Instant mute button.

I mean, what's the point of him duplicating this track when even his vocal sounds as if it's Elbow?

everything has changed - but I don't like it.
From a 7 to a 5.
I've come to the conclusion that the musical arrangement distracts more than focuses attention to what is going on in the lyrics. The original Elbow arrangement is much more to the point and as other posters mentioned it actually underlines the singing. Still... It is Peter Gabriel and I have always liked his stuff, the production quality is as always excellent, there is just too much of it.
So a 5 it is.
Perfect transition from Moody Blues "Om"    {#Daisy}

I love Elbow. I love Peter Gabriel. They're different. Deal with it.

Yeah!!  {#Nyah}
Funny, as I think my RP comments on the Elbow version state that their singer is clearly influenced by Peter Gabriel (not a bad thing). So this is the ultimate compliment.
When I heard this I thought it WAS Elbow.  I actually enjoyed this version, though I'm still of the mind that covers need to walk a fine line between being too much like the original band and sounding almost nothing like the original song.
My erythrocytes are scratching too, after listening to this version.
Curious that Peter is now doing a cover, rather than others copying him.

This is a beautiful homage—the song ia great—but Elbow's version has more impact, and more pure emotion. This pales in comparison.

I am running to my cd player to put the Elbow version on, so I can forget this version asap.

Thanks, don't need to hear this version again. Elbow does it best.

x2

Yeah, the strings section sounds like it is warming up.....

Interesting but far short of Elbow.

Where is the snooring emoticon?
The original is MUCH better. 2.
I completely disagree with the Elbow-head purists. Gabriel is, as always, god-like. {#Nyah}

Although very well composed with amazing, over the top instrumental contributions, he discarded the one chord progression that made the original song so great, at the lyric "everything has changed".  The removal of that one genius chord change makes this version so much less than the original and therefore somewhat of a self-indulgence IMHO.  But who would expect Peter Gabriel to be guilty of self-indulgence!  Of course, that is what happens when you try to improve upon a perfect song.

Exactly so. This seems pointless and filled with the sorts of frills you expect from a first-year compo student with access to an orchestra.

Thanks, don't need to hear this version again. Elbow does it best.
OMG this sucks! I usually like Peter Gabriel and was looking forward to his cover, but this is not good at all. Maybe it's because I love Elbow and this is one of my favorite songs. He's stripped away all the feeling and emotion from the lyrics. It's a tender love song Guy wrote for his girlfriend, but this just leaves me cold.
For me PG sounds like overbloated stream of consciousness crap. I used to really like his stuff but I've now crossed him off my christmas list. Ugh....{#Puke}
I kinda like this.

So is there purposeful irony in covering a dude who's trying like hell to sound like him to begin with?
I don't think Guy Garvey is "trying like hell" to sound like Peter Gabriel....he just does so naturally...and does a great job at it while bringing is own creativity to the recording studio.Elbow is my new favorite band and Peter Gabriel has always been my favorite performer
.With that being said.....this whole album is very disappointing.

Attention Wal-mart shoppers...  This is a Peter Gabriel's version of a beautiful and wonderful song.

{#Yell}    Elbow please.

Everything I've heard off this album is pointless.
Elbows version by much more then a nose!!!!

I much prefer this to the Elbow version.

I think you're right. My first impression is that I don't love the string arrangement, but I have a feeling this cover will grow on me.

Quite over the top version, first I thought this was a bonus take of the original Elbow song then I realised that it was PG.
I like it for now, but it will have to take a few more spins before I have settled my conflicting emotions.
Peter Gabriel takes step backward, while Guy Garvey steps forward with his contribution to Massive Attack's latest.

sorry, I like Peter and mean to take nothing from his talent but the original of this by Elbow is so much better.  Even more so heard live in concert.

yeah, this song live by elbow is pretty breathtaking. I believe it brought me to tears ( in a GOOD way).

Why, Peter? Why? No need. I'm a big fan of his, too. This is a miss.
{#Lol} wtf?

I can't be objective ... the original is too good.  This is a bit too bombastic ...
I was waiting to hear this - Mr. Gabriel adds nothing to this song, Elbow's version remains superior.

Is Peter planning an "acoustic" tour? Last tour he looked tired...
Great string arrangements
It took a few listens ( of the whole collection) but Gabriel's renditions / arrangements are interesting and most likeable.
Heh - is this the Broadway version?

Something isn't right here...no, something is very wrong...
I was initially excited about this cover when I heard about it, especially since Guy Garvey sounds so much like PG.  That said, all this version makes me want to do is listen to the original.

Peter - please put out some original music.  Easy Star All Stars can handle cover albums from this point forward.
Like elbow MUCh better.  Too tricked up.
I love Peter G. but.....hmmmm...maybe not like this?

i think worse... very very worse. feels a bit disney to me...
