If I walk down this hallway tonight it's too quiet
So I pad through the dark and call you on the phone
Push your old numbers and let your house ring
'Til I wake your ghost

Let him walk down your hallway
It's not this quiet
Slide down your receiver, sprint across the wire
Follow my number and slide into my hand

It's the blaze across your nightgown
It's the phone's ring

(4xs)

I think last night, you were driving circles around me

I can't drink this coffee 'till I put you in my closet
Let him shoot me down and let him call me off
Take it from his whisper, you're not that tough

It's the blaze across your nightgown
It's the phone's ring

(4xs)
I think last night, you were driving circles around me

I think that anyone who doesn’t like this version as well as hershs’ version and who ask him to play the original more well they ought to be recurring donators.....I am. .
I disagree..I really like this rendition .  it is gloomy and stoney-if that's a word. . play it, man !  MilesW wrote:
I agree with most everyone here - the original version is so much better that there was no real reason to release this one - it's not different enough, and certainly not as haunting.  Bill, if you're going to play this song, please play more of the original...

Who did the original version, and when? Sorry to be an ignoramus :(
You play this song to my death.
Is the record skipping?
It's a wonder to me that after 642 ratings, this is a 7.1.  I mute it right away.  I guess I'm in the minority here.  A strong 2 at best.
Hate this song... UGGGG {#Hand}

I guess it's kind of like Hollyweird doing re-makes of great movies. If it was considered great in the first place, what makes you think you can make it better. I've heard very few remakes that were better than the original. The SRV cover of Little Wing IMO is a notable exception and I love Jimi's masterpiece.
Sorry guys, I'm gonna have to switch off before I become comatose

this song and it's answer song suck big time. murder/sooniside rockopera sucks.maby if we get lucky they will self destruct and begone
Not even close to as good as the original, so no real point.
i love the original. the sound is great on this version, but the lyrics don't quite work coming from a male point of view.
What VAST, oh, I guess it wasn't.  Sure did sound like Jon Crosby at first.
I slightly prefer the original as well, but this version also has a certain something. The fact that it's sung by a man gives it a very different atmosphere. 7.
Everybody in my trailer park agrees, my cover of this is better than Greg's but nowhere even close to the Hersch/Stipes version.

But we still enjoy this one too, GREAT SONG!
Yeah, Hersh's version is better. I've always LOVED that version so I went and found it and listened to it and compared the two songs and we're right, Hersh is better.
You can listen to it here:

I got it the first 20 times....
It's hard not to be a little critical of perfectly good covers of masterpiece songs.  Laswell does well here and in truth, the rest of this album full of cover songs is worth finding.  Why Bill doesn't break out the other songs is beyond me.
Pointless and disappointing cover of one of the greatest songs ever.  Greg would have been well advised not to stand next to Michael and Kristen.
Ok, time for something a little more upbeat.  Starting to kill the vibe at work.  Or not; whatever you figure.
I think, right now, this song is driving circles around me...making me a bit crazy...
Nice to hear Ms Hersh covered!

Bollocks" /ˈbɒləks/ is a word of Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning "testicles". The word is often used figuratively in British English and Hiberno-English, as a noun to mean "nonsense", an expletive following a minor accident or misfortune, or an adjective to mean "poor quality" or "useless". Similarly, the common phrases "Bollocks to this!" or "That's a load of old bollocks" generally indicate contempt for a certain task, subject or opinion. Conversely, the word also figures in idiomatic phrases such as "the dog's bollocks", "top bollock(s)", or more simply "the bollocks" (as opposed to just "bollocks"), which will refer to something which is admired, approved of or well-respected.

Thank you, Data. Please return to your station.
This song is one of the only ways I can tolerate Greg Laswell. I like this actually.
i'm sad now
The Kristin Hersh version still gives me chills....
Not really fond of it so can't give it more than a 5.

Great song,nice version,but the original from Kirstin Hersh is ten times better!

Hell yeah!!!!
3>2.  Makes me want to hear the original version by Kristin Hersh since she wasn't taking qualudes in the studio.
This is my favorite version of this great song.
I didn't want to like this.  I really didn't.  But I lost.  I do like it.  Dammit.
 gladly..I'll bring a guitar and a mic  LongGoneDaddy wrote:

It would be nice to hear Fleetwood Mac's "Ghost" after this one.

Super agreed!  I love this cover.  It speaks to the original and keeps it true to Laswell.  I've listened to the rest of the album as well and it's all brilliant!  Thanks for the new tunes, Bill!

totally fits the moment!!!! thanks

Thank for noting the original . It was driving mecrazy who stipe cut that track with
I'll agree that the production is better, but this version is bland and mechanical compared to the original.  It just doesn't sound like his heart is in it.
50 FT WAVE!  just play it; this guy sounds like he needs a nap...

this is an awesome cover of the original, it has better production values, but.....somehow, since i have heard the original so many times, i still prefer that version.  some songs just sound better when sung in a discordant manner.
All I can think of now when I hear this, is what a damn lucky guy Greg Laswell is.
Congrats, Mr. Ingrid Michaelson...

D'accord! Ghosts round here too. A.

I think last night you were driving circles around me.

...damn, I'm dizzy
I love this song and the ghostly vibe it gives me
You were in my dream  {#Meditate}

I love both versions of this song but I must admit I like the Hersh/Stipe best.

...i rescind that comment:  volume makes a profound difference in this version, listen to it loud and it works very well...

the disharmonious clash of stipe and hersh is the reason why the original is good.  it sounds like agony, which is the friggin' point, yo.

I agree. I miss that in this version.{#Rolleyes}
just bumped it up to 8...nicely done
I like that It doesn't have Michael Stipes squealing in it like the original though I still like it regardless..

Still pontificating... with beer... should know... soon...?

Awesome
GOOD, nice twist on the original...this gives it a mood all its own.

At first glance, I read that as 'clash of Pipe and Hash'. Arf!

They're both pretty good, IMO, and both raise the hairs on my arms. Having heard the Kristin Hersh version on RP I think I'd prefer that, marginally, but this guy makes a good fist of it and brings a lot of feeling to the song. 8 from the Nottingham jury.

Meh.

Um, wha...? {#Ask}

Undecided... growing... fading... not sure...{#Think}
Heard this cover first so had to listen to the original... prefer this one for sure.  His voice is fantastic and the music is more full and rich.

What some have called disharmony I actually find to be one of the best aspects of the original song.  I prefer the original.

Yikes—harsh! {#Surprised}  I liked the original...

bring on the 50 FT Wave version!
Love this song, nice cover of it!
This guy seems to be almost unknown!  Amazon lists this EP as temporarily out of stock, and does not show a listing of tracks.  I had to dig to find this review: LINK  It's interesting that he chose to record covers of five female artists! {#Think}

Nice. I prefer this to the original.
{#Curtain}  His fireplace voice does this song {#melts into a puddle emoticon} sweet justice.  Loving the male voiced version!! {#Cheers}

Not the same.  Not bad, but not Kristin.  I listened to original just a few minutes ago!

agreed, but it's tough to compete with her.
The guitar is nice, though Kristin's voice makes the song for me. Oh, and Stipe's too.

So long ago I heard this song, I've even forgotten who sang it first (a female singer, right?). Good song nonetheless!
Kristen Hersh did a much better job with this one.
This is just a great song.
