I would dare you, but I know I don't need to.
You're going to do just what you want to.
You're going to take the leading chair at the fairground
You're going to sing the praises of your fruit

Mine smell like honey, uhh
Mine smell like honey, uhh
Mine smell like huh huh huh huh
honey, uhh

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper
Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper
Track a trail of honey through it all

If the end comes faster than we had expected
And predictions lead us to the final fall
If the flowers crack the grain, and weave,
the pattern of the pavement
I can hear you shouting over it all

Mine smell like honey, uhh
Mine smell like honey, uhh
Mine smell like huh huh huh huh
honey, uhh

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper
Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper
Track a trail of honey through it all

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper
Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper
Track a trail of honey through it all

You track a trail of honey through it all
You track a trail of honey

I've rarely seen such a uniform distribution of votes on RP

Maybe you should spend less time listening to honey and more time listening to music instead.
Well, this song doesn't smell or sound like honey.
I adore them but this is the proof of a band in decline.
Mickk Marrs on geetar!
I am a big R.E.M. fan - right from Chronic Town - but this is the first time I have ever heard this particular song.

Hmmm ... they have (re)settled their sound, after Bill Berry left. This is not tentative or wandering - straight up blast of sound. It takes getting used too.

6 so far ...
Dig it - reminiscent of a sort of dead letter office kind of feel and such a funny name for a song.
It's REM don't take it that seriously people....

As much as I share your dislike of this particular song, I strongly recommend listening again to some of their later output - if you're lazy, their 1988-2003 Best Of collection (In Time) will do. If this embarrassing piece of crap still sounds like any post 1987 R.E.M. song to you, you might want to consider consulting an ear specialist {#Angel}
Horrid. Take the worst and double the whine.

I'm an REM fan, but this is annoying.

I now have nightmares about this song. I hate it - and I don't hate very many songs. Off to radioparadise. Grrrrr.

Why would you listen to it long enough to let it get to that point?

 REM- just say no. {#No}
I would like the throwback REM sound, were it not for the ridiculous lyrics and allusions... TMI, Michael.

sounds like a contractual obligation album
I must admit that I´m quite disappointed with this new R.E.M. album - too much songs sounding as if they have been there before, but in better versions, And all-in-all an album which cannot decide which side it should be going.
"Mine Smell Like Honey" however is of their best "harder" songs, in my opinion... And there are at least 2 or 3 other really good songs on the album.
Reading the majority of the remarks here, I really don´t get it: Is there some djihad or intifada going on against R.E.M.? What have they done to receive such hatred and contempt. This is ridicilous!
If R.E.M. is not your thing just shut up, won´t you? Maybe "Collapse into now" is not a masterpiece, but it is certainly not the End of the world as we know it..
Oh my heart (and ears). No offense, but anyone calling Collapse Into Now" their "best since NAIHF" or even AFTP must be delusional IMO. I don't really mind them recycling their back catalogue - if only they'd recycle it well...
R.E.M. . . . W.H.Y.??
Please, never again

All noise, no melody
ew
dig a hole, deeper and deeper
 then drop this in

Baaahahahaha! {#High-five}
God, I hate this song
Singing about his farts ?

HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!
I think it's an attempt to capture the way they wrote songs in the early days. If you look at the lyrics of the first 3-4 lps you'll see that most of them are completely nonsensical, but they were really good at creating a certain vibe. This fails to do that.
REM; "Hey! It's a paycheck!"
If nothing else, this song as given rise to some amusing comments.

R.E.M. has gone around the bend. I used to love this band, but not any more. I give it a 1.

Not bad!

Yuck... this is putrid compared to "Me In Honey"...

Wow, even romeotuma doesn't like this. I'm with you, brother.

If these lyrics were an English assignment, sorry to say I'd have to give them a C+...really, after all this, Master Stipe, you can't write something "deeper" than this?

"Everyone loves the smell of his own brand"
