If you were wondering if Classical String Musicians could play Bluegrass the answer we are being given is NO. They just don't have the improvisational skills

That's what I told your mom last night.

I have some friends who's son went back to Harvard to get a degree in Chemistry. He already had one in something else.   It was during Harvard's 350 anniversary.

For this celebration the school asked some of it's more famous alum to come in stay in the houses they lived in when they where students.

Ma  came to stay in this kids house.  I understand that this young man plays a decent piano (which is good be because he want to be a surgeon).

So this young man and Mr. Ma started playing. They finally called it quits at dawn. An experience of a life time for any musician.  It must have been magical.

No, but it would be cool if Yo-Yo Ma were my cousin.
The reverse of a boomerang kid?

I like how Bill had this song play after Natural Blues from Moby. The connection is only apparent if you check the comment section - this song comes from The Goat Rodeo Sessions, Moby's tune has a picture of a goat as one of the top comments. Well played, good sir.

Two years later, it's still in the same place.

"And now for something completely different" are my favorite words on Radio Paradise!

My appreciation for Yo-Yo Ma grows every time I hear him engage in "alternative" projects, pushing his artistry far beyond classical music.  Well done!
Omg...stop this!

What makes RP a better picker-upper than the other brands.

Why so many references to "brands" on this piece? Aren't we just talking about music and people? It's chilling to see how broadly accepted the commodification of every aspect of living has become. Now back to listening to people making air vibrate.....

It's a hoe-down for people that haven't tuned up and can't play.  Self indulgent dirge. :

...reinventing his "brand" ..? there's a shot right through the heart. heed his comment all,.. a corporate mind will always and forever steal what's vital and brilliant in creative expression, wring out every dollar and leave it commercialized and lifeless on the ground for survivors to pity and remenisce or scowl at. Personally I think Yo Yo Ma in the old mountain folk genre is too polished. Where it shines in technique and clarity is exactly where it lacks in soul and authenticity. There's no struggle, no joy for winning, no simple life. Fake. A perfect distraction for corporate "heads". 'keeps 'em away from the good stuff. thanks RP, keep it comin :)

I couldn't agree less. Plus, I love the album name.
That man can play the mandolin.
Oh Lordie, I do love me my Radio Paradise!

I love this album. Thanks for playing something from it.
I just spent the weekend listening to myriad Folkies, Nowegians, Spaniards, Icelanders, Backwoodians, Mountaineers, Bluegrassites and assorted Irish baladeers, but few compared to the sheer skill levels demonstrated here.
However, this is a blast of fresh air.
Oh, I missed out the Tabla quintet, the Aussie trekker, the sensitive Femmes and assorted scarf twirlers.

You got it right, annoying. Great musicians or not.

Awesome!
Have to put these fellows together with Allison Kraus.
Yo Yo has certainly branched out, reinventing his brand and expanding the audience in these days when classical music concerts are less well attended and CD sales are down. He's a a great musician by any measure, even if you don't like this.

so sick of this....

Annoying!
Reminds me of some of Aaron Copeland's work.
 {#Lol}
I guess insults are fine by me if they are funny.

A LITTLE like some Dixie Dregs...or maybe a bit more like some of Steve Morse's solo work.

I think I listened to this song at the local Renaissance Fest
after downing 5 pints. Love it!

I play the viola, and let me tell you....THIS IS AWESOME! {#Boohoo}

Nice! This album is quite a showcase for these four very talented fellows.
Saw these guys on Colbert, and the music was so good and they were having such an obviously great time doing it - a nice 8.

... pretty much sums it up for me as well -8 also

I guess these guys are okay...
I don't think these guys are capable of formulating a poor idea or playing a bad note. Betcha this recording is cool beans.
Reminds me of fun times spent in Ireland! =)
love it
Not for me, sorry.
Got this CD for Christmas.  It's amazing.  So glad to hear this track on RP!  The group Ma is playing with did this in performance on The Colbert Report.  I'm sure it's easy to find on YouTube.

Great collaboration! I like when superstar virtuosos are down to earth, reach across genre boundaries and get out there and have fun making music of all kinds. Joshua Bell is another like that as are many others.

Edit: Should'a checked out the link below first. Yo-Yo Ma calls himself a "venture culturalist," which is funny and really right on. Also there is a link to some Crooked Still music and an interesting interview with their lead vocalist, Aoife O'Donovan (who sings with Chris Thile in the Tiny Desk Concert). They're great fun to hear and see.

I have time for anything that involves Yo-Yo Ma.

Music collaboration really has no limits, does it. Interesting track.
hurry up Christmas... I want my copy of this album !

They visited NPR's Tiny Desk Concert:

Yo-yo Ma often crosses genres to produce very interesting music - this is no exception. {#Cool}
What a nice playful little ditty!  A strong 7 from me. {#Boohoo}
