Excellent! I never heard of them before. Thanx RP!
Years ago heard this tune on RP and fell in love with it. I don't know how many times I listened this tune afterwards. It was a door to discover the music of Idan Raichel. I keep listening RP to find gems like this.
This falls firmly in the "only on RP" category. In a very good way.
Kinda reminds me of Sona Jobarteh who's from Gambia BTW. Check out her wonderful music.
So ancient, yet so thoroughly modern!
Gutless....... Boring.... blech ( with a hard "h" like in Bach....)  :)

Your point being?

No point, really.
Excelent!

Wow. What a nice find.

First time for this one-it's going onto my iPad.  A solid 8.

Very true Mon Frere...

Every once in awhile some of us forget that.  ALL opinions welcome.  So many colorful personalities here and diverse opinions.  Sometimes I get a little bored with the board and drift away (not enough new comments) and then usually there is someone who makes it interesting again.  Someone calling me a troll for the crime of my (moderate liberal) political views.   I like all you folks, even my little stalker buddy.....no hard feelings....
There was an article in the New York Times about this unusual collaboration earlier this week:

I heard about these recordings recently on NPR and found their website:  "Israeli superstar Idan Raichel and Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré first met at an airport in Germany in 2008 while both were on tour. From this chance encounter an artistic kinship was born, culminating in an unscripted recording session that took place one afternoon in November 2010 in a small Tel Aviv studio. Joined by Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian calabash player Souleymane Kane, Idan and Vieux improvised a masterful selection of songs that capture the unbridled creativity and inspired collaboration of these four brilliant musicians. The Touré-Raichel Collective was formed and the songs they recorded are the foundation of the album The Tel Aviv Session."

How cool is this?!

Reminds me quite a bit of "Chronos" by James Farm, a quartet with Joshua Redman:

Good if you like repetition and variation (I do). For others, maybe not so much.

Makes my head hurt.

While I like V.F. Toure, this brings to mind a Malian Take 5.

Excellent. This is how music takes you places.
Excellent. Leaves to go searching...
Just love the dialogue among string instruments (including the piano)! {#Sunny}

I absolutely LOVE world music of almost all kinds, but this is WAY less than the sum of its parts. It ends up being neither fish nor fowl and dilutes the mastery of the individuals.
...set your controls for the heart of the sun...
As I listen, I try and drink a glass of wine upside down. Zpilshch!!!

If you blur your eyes and look at the cover art...it looks like the Cookie monster or Grover mounting Elmo. Geez...MuppetLust.
I have yet to hear such "collaboration recording" which is more than barely an exploitation of couple of short phrases both musicians feel confident about. Instead of unifying whole two different worlds together, we usually get a stripped-down subset of the two languages, marginally improved by good production. This is not an exception. 4/10

Cool-issimo - thanks for digging this up.
Really nice recording- very lively, well balanced, nice sense of the acoustic space. Musically take it or leave it but I like what the're doing. One question- When does Ry Cooder plan on jamming with them?

Exactly my feeling. Really nice at the start, then getting tedious, and finally annoying.
