If I'm butter, if I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
Showing a dancing bird of paradise

If I'm butter, if I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
Showing a dancing bird of paradise

He excites me
Must be like a genesis of rhythm
I get feisty
Whenever I'm with him

If I'm butter, if I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
Showing a dancing bird of paradise

I'm a hot knife, I'm a hot knife
I'm a hot knife, he's a pat of butter
If I get a chance, I'm gonna show him that
He's never gonna need another, never need another

If I'm butter, if I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
Showing a dancing bird of paradise

I'm a hot knife, I'm a hot knife

Excellent moving use of distinctive voice
Boy is this bad.  When it gives me a headache, that's bad.  And Apple's first album is much better than this.  Please stop it.
Rounds and drums, how could that be bad?

That is what is nice about the volume control.  If you personally have an issue with a song, just turn the volume off until the next comes along.  I like this one, but rush to the volume control for "me in the corner losing my religion" or goats going to hell.  Quite simple really.  No head banging necessary.

or use the "PSD" button to Play Something Different.   No one likes everything played on an eclectic station like this, but of course, that's why we listen to it, rather than Pandora. . .  just so we DO hear something that we have not heard before, and get a glorious mix of different genres.
I USE TO be a Fiona Apple fan.........
This would be a good song to choreograph with modern jazz dance.
Love ya Fiona ... keep being yourself .... a true artist of all senses.

Love her or hate her, she's never boring.
Heard this in the background; outstanding & orginal.  Registered for the first time so I could give +ve feedback
It's good to know that there are still artists pushing the boundaries in a meaningful way, rather than just wearing meat.. "ohh look at me I'm so avant garde". How come we never hear Laurie Anderson on this station?
This song is a strange mix of styles. Can't decide if I like it.
I need to buy this, pronto!!! Go, Fiona, you go, woman! {#Bananapiano}

Oh Dear God, MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!{#Frustrated}
So, I bought this album and have had it for a while, and I'm starting to form my opinion of it, from a die hard Fiona fan...

Taken as an album, I think it's a failure. With When the Pawn... or Extraordinary Machine, I can put them on and listen through all the way, with maybe only one or two urges to skip a track. In fact, I think both are almost better when listened to that way, they are greater than each song taken alone.

Not so with Idler Wheel... It's almost excruciating to listen to it straight through. It's TOO experimental. There's no flow from one melody into another...

Now what is good: It's still Fiona's great, biting lyrics and singing style. And the songs, when they pop up individually in a shuffle session are mostly are actually pretty good taken alone... She made a great collection of experiemental sounding singles... But I was hoping for another album like the last couple, so I guess she's still in the business of doing what she wants, not what the audience wants...
It's certainly different. I applaud the attempt to make music that's not just a variation on love woes blues social emotional confusion. But this song overstays its welcome. A prolonged version of this might be equivalent to stereophonic waterboarding.

I can dig it. Fun to listen to.
i like it.
Maybe it's the intricate, loony eccentricity along with the vocal gymnastics, but something about this piece to me hearkens vaguely to  Tull or Led Zeppelin.

I like it!

This is the one that sucked , not the previous song.......

This is so horrid I had to stop what I was doing at work to bitch and complain. FUCKING STOP IT ALREADY.
still crazy after all these years
hot knife?  pat of butter?    please.
She is never dull...really like this.
Really bad...

...meets Freddy Mercury. If I'm not mistaken—can't tell from the credits on AMG—she's singing all the vocal parts. And she's continuing to develop her stylistic range, especially her jazz chops. I haven't gotten or heard the whole album yet, but if this is any indication, we have a massive talent on the verge of doing something very special if not monumental. It's one thing to work through your youthful issues (Tidal) and another to celebrate your blossoming artistry (Extraordinary Machine), but writing about the world around you, something outside yourself, is a major step.
Can't believe you have all given it such a poor rating {#Whipit}

I thought it was exciting!
I like it more and more with each listen. Well done, Fiona!

Everyone in my group therapy session dislikes this song.

(except for the guy who thinks dislike is too strong of a word and has negative connotations.)

WOW!!!  Never heard this one before.  A seriously sexed up, sizzlin' on the griddle, need a cold shower kind of song.  Love the rounding and the quirky lyrics.  Puts me in mind of Laurie Andersen somehow.   Go, Bill.

Yeah, this is fun. I agree with you about the Laurie Anderson similarity, although this is catchier than Laurie's stuff.

I just like the groove.  Forgive me, oh arbiter of cool.  {#Razz}

Maybe, but it's a glorious mess. Loving it.

AND NOW...for something.....Completely......different

What the living hell was THAT?

I won't make the mistake of listening to that mess again.
Really, really liking the sound of this.

Nicely put. I really do not like this, in no small part because it sounds like it's supposed to be oh so very clever.
Reminds me of Zap Mama

This is probably AWESOME live, but on my typing-headphones it's just ... not. To distracting do anything..
Confession.  After a few listens I've come around on this one.  There's something that hooked me.  Mebbe the piano chords, the drumming or mebbe it's just a quirky enough and original-enough sounding track.  I'm up to an 8 on it now.  Or it coulda just been the purple microdot...
I think Fiona is doing too many hot knives!
Hot Knife to the brain. Sonic root canal. Aural colonoscopy. Only for the masochistic. Right up there with Phillip Glass. Cool beacuse you think it has to be.
The cover art does not reveal the light-hearted music within.  I wonder what the thought process was behind featuring such an off-putting portrait on the cover.

Addendum — Starbucks and other distributors added another overleaf to the cover, featuring a black/white photo of Fiona Apple.  Apparently the original cover was repulsive to most distributors as well.

This is different, and different is GOOD!!!!
How's the whole album?
I'm not crazy about this track.
I own a couple of her earlier CDs ...
So good to hear Fiona again!!
New to RP and loving it. Tracks like this make you stop and listen - music not sound.

Love this and can't stand Bjork or Mitchell. But I agree that they are all ultra-creative.
Once again, Fiona delivers. Just when pop needed a shot in the arm, along comes Ms Apple. I'll be buying this one; I've got her three previous albums. They never leave my stereo and I've got them on my mp3 player, too. Bill is right. This is not her longest album title. "When the Pawn Hits the Conflict He Thinks Like a King" is a good contender.

Intriguing.  First time I've heard Apple.  Will check out more.  Thanks RP.

Bjork meets Joni Mitchell
What a contrast in creative music from Leonard Cohen - not complaining about Leonard - just enjoying the contrast as only RP can deliver.

What you said (well, what you acronymed).

Refreshing! A nice change from all the legacy music that gets played on RP.

Love the solidness of her voice and her willingness to break the mold. Enjoyable.
A well-deserved "1" Good job!
This makes me think of high school choir warmups for a PDQ Bach number.
Or the kind of experiment that one is compelled to conduct with their first multitrack recorder.
Compare and contrast "We Have Heaven" from the Yes Roundabout album.

Were it anyone but my beloved Fiona, I would have written it off already. I have to give it several listens, preferably in the context of the whole album, before I pass judgement... It's no Paper Bag, I can tell you that though...

Like hot knife in my eardrum. Nice try, but Fiona is deep on her own trip.

That was original!
I'm glad she came back. I was afraid she won't...

The song is quite interesting. It reminds me of Carolina Chocolate Drops.
what a mess
ahhh, new Fiona. and it's fun.
Just wait, it will grow on you.
Weird!  Luckily, I'm in a mood for weird.
Huh??!!!
Like FA...but this song not so much. Maybe on more listens it will grow to my liking. idk.
WTF??
Thank you for playing something so fresh!!  {#Yes}
