When the wild-eyed dogs of day to day
Come snapping at your heels
And there's so much coming at you
That you don't know how to feel
When they've taken all your money
And then come back for your clothes
When your hands are full of thorns
But you can't quit groping for the rose

In the southland of the heart
Where night blooms perfume the breeze
Lie down
Take your rest with me

When thoughts you've tried to leave behind
Keep sniping from the dark
When the fire burns inside you but
You jump from every spark
When your heart's beset by memories
You wish you'd never made
When the sun comes up an enemy
And nothing gives you shade

In the southland of the heart
Where the saints go lazily
Lie down
Take your rest with me

When the preacher lays his insight down
And claims to lead the blind
When those you trust just get you hooked
And trifle with your mind
When the nightmare's creeping closer
And your wheels are in the mud
When everything's ambiguous
Except the taste of blood

In the southland of the heart
There's no question of degree
Lie down
Take your rest with me

In the southland of the heart
Everyone was always free
Lie down
Take your rest with me

He has a new CD out with instrumentals only, on it. I was amazed to hear what a great picker he is. I've always loved his lyrics and voice, but the new CD is pretty amazing. (Note: It's mostly re-released songs, but there are 2-3 new ones.)

From that album ... I saw him play the End of All Rivers live earlier this year (solo performance in a beautiful theatre.) It was perfect
That song helped my restless heart to rest.
Thanks y’all. I love it 🥰

Van Morrison called. He wants his song back.

Yeah, he'd need it back; he's only got about five songs anyhow, just with 300 different titles.
Great song. Great cd. {#Notworthy}
Canada has a lot of retards, apparently...

Outstanding set! Keep them coming!
Man Bill, this is such an awesome set this morning! My lady love is coming home this weekend, and all these songs (from Nora Jones to-so far-this, are all just singing what I'm already feeling in my heart. I love my girlfriend.....I just wish we could get married :(
AWESOME! JUST AWESOME!!!!

No doubt. See him live--you'll be flabbergasted.
Interesting pick. I used some of these lyrics in a V-Day card several years back - when things were going a little rough.

Wow. No kidding: When those you trust just get you hooked And trifle with your mind ... Nice horny bits at the end, too.
And When the fire burns inside you And you leap from every spark
I heard an interview with him on public radio a little while back...smart dude. Really thinks about things...also a bit of a romantic.

This song is typical of most of this album... pleasant enough, but not as unique or thought provoking as his better work.
I just saw Bruce live last week, here in Denver, and the yawners (below) would certainly wake up and listen if they took the time to see him live! Absolutely one of the most outstanding musicians alive today.

I think the song is just ok, but his voice is terrific
I like Maria Muldaur's version that's played here on RP too. They're both good.
The sort of song that\'s very suitable for a steelguitar, the more so as it\'s played so beautiful.
boring
Sleepy time. Wake me when it\'s over.
