!Ay, que laureles tan verdes!
!Que rosas tan encendidas!
Si piensas abandonarme mejor quitame la vida;
Alza los ojos a verme
Si no estas comprometido.

Eres mata de algodon
Que vives en el capullo;
Ay, que tristeza me da
Cuando te llenas de orgullo
De ver a mi corazon
Enredado con el tuyo!

Eres rosa de castilla
Que solo en mayo se ve
Quisiera hacerte un invite,
Pero la verda no se
Si tiene quien te lo evite,
Mejor me separare.

Por "ai" va la despedida,
Chinito por tus quereres
La perdicion de los hombres
Son las benditas mujeres;

Y aqui se acaban cantando
Los versos de los laureles.

Would you say this song has a plethora of comments?
I just want to say that as someone who married into a very large Mexican family almost forty years ago and has attended many a back yard cook out, this album is well respected. She does a very good job overall with all the songs on this album.
To me, good music.
One of the best love/ sorrow songs ever! Even though it still burns my heart like molten lava, sometimes I can't resist playing this whole fabulous album, along with my Miguel Aceves Mejia collection (one of the true Masters of the style)... It is immortal music, and it celebrates and elevates the voice as a great instrument!

I highly recommend watching Linda Rondstadt: The Sound of My Voice - what an amazing voice and heartbreaking that an illness robbed her of this. I never could sing along to all of her music but loved the attempt. What a career!
Wow
Wow! Took me right back to when I was a motorcycle courier in Los Angeles 1989. Thanks Bill.

Bought the cassette tape album from a street seller near Venice & Lincoln Blvd and still have it today, although I listen to the album Canciones de mi Padre via Spotify now...

Grammarcop did your friend turn you on to WMVY radio when you were there?
Woah. Linda Ronstadt sings this? What planet is this?

Planet Paradise?
I was introduced to this album while visiting a friend on Cape Cod. The two are forever fused in my mind.
Singing rancheras is a fucking art, and Linda delivers.  What is even more amazing is that she really does a great job with our hard "r" and "j" grande linda
Loved hearing this over lunch in my home in Italy. I grew up listening to LR in Phoenix. A unique album from a one-of-a-kind artist.

Why do they always only bring out three tortillas for a piling heap of fajitas?  Isn't it obvious that that's only half of what I need to consume the fajitas properly?  Are they really saving anything substantial by not bringing six tortillas?  They could make up for it maybe by halving the amount of rice and beans on the side.  Better yet, skip the rice and beans and double the guacamole and sour cream.  Know what I'm saying?

Couldn't agree more.  On the other hand, we could just ditch the food and have a couple more shooters.
Damn, this gorgeous lady could belt it out!!  Thanks for the great recordings.
An 8. Without question.

This followed the Nelson Riddle records (superb btw) which also left some people scratching their heads.

Oh, this is fun! :o)

I used to be a news photographer here. Our chief of police for many years was Peter Ronstadt, Linda's brother. So in his office, he had a gold record of Canciones. He sang on it. He has a really nice voice!

Great story! Thank you!
Be stlll my heart. I was working away when I heard this come on, and recognized her voice. Had to stop what I was doing and soak it in.
Wow, what a voice!
Tan Buenos recuerdos, un trago pa’ la salud del pueblo mexicano !

Couldn't resist asking Google Translate this song.  My basic gringa Spanish couldn't do it.  The translation probably isn't pefect but ...

Oh, what laurels so green!
What roses so bright!
If you think of giving me up better, take my life away;
Lift your eyes to see me
If you are not committed.

You're cotton wool
That you live in the cocoon;
Oh, what sadness it gives me
When you fill with pride
To see my heart
Tangled with yours!

You are rose of castile
That only in May it is seen
I would like to make you an invite,
But the truth is not
If it has who avoids you to you,
Better I will separate myself.

By "ai" goes the farewell,
Chinito by your quereres
The perdition of the men
They are the blessed women;

And here they end up singing
The verses of the laurels.

Ay mi Linda! I think this is the first I've heard anything from this album. Love this song... EXCEPT when she strains too hard when she's belting and her voice turns harsh. Otherwise, muy buena!

An "8" -- Most Excelemundo!

OBTW - the comments on this song are some of the funniest on RP. Definitely worth a read...

She's really feeling it, and I feel that. And I like how that feels.

Oh, my! Aiy, aiy, aiy! The memories, the time-machine quality of this thing...Me and the Mexican ex-, in happier times and warmer climes...

You go Linda!
BTW, Jerry Brown is governor again! ;)
(Tim Curry "I Do The Rock" 1979)
Linda Ronstad has lost her voice to Parkinson's, as most know.  I hope she does well with her book, and in life as well as apparently Julie Andrews did after losing her voice.
¡Uya, Linda, ea!

Never a full moment on RP!

Love it! I busted out laughing and turned it up. Keep it going Bill!
I love RP!! My neighbors don't know WHAT the hell I've got going on over here.

Sure.  Glad to help.

Warm heartfelt, yet intricate, music.  Beautifully played and richly sung.  It's uh ... the reason you listen to RP.
"I'll have the fajitas, please.  With extra tortillas on the side.  Thanks."
I demand more vaquero songs!
Oh no, ipod time ...
 wasn't expecting this here.  she sure did have a set of pipes.
Thanks, RP! Thanks for playing all sorts of music of quality. This brightens my day.
Ay, yay, yay!! Que retechula es la parranda, con tequila y charanda!  (The party is totally awesome, with tequila and charanda(a native Mexican-Indian alcohol similar to Rum)).  Thanks RP for playing one of my favorite Mariachi recordings, by the gringa, Linda Rondstadt, from Tucson, Az. Canciones de Mi Padre is a classic. The Mariachi Orquestra that backed some of LInda on this album is the awesome Los Camperos lead by Nati Cano. Viva la Mariachi!! And if you want to watch it, you might be able to purchase a copy of the made for PBS performance of this album. I bought a copy of it for my brother years ago for Christmas.
¡Viva Mexico!
Love Linda!
Having grown up in Tucson I have a big soft spot for mariachis and tejano.
I Can only understand about 50 words but I still love it.

You have to be brave to venture into Mariachi land...I believe she pulled it off!
Uh...Linda? Linda? I didn't know you performed on Telemundo. Ok...keep on singing and convince me to move in with you.
I remember when she did this.  Not impressed now that I'm listening to it today. {#Ass}
I so love these two albums of Lindas', i feel right at home, so does she no doubt!
more please...?
Hell yeah! I used to have this album. It's wonderful!

WTF?
Fantastic!  Can't believe my ears!  What a great drinking song this is, in the grand old sing-along Mariachi tradition, as are so many others on this stellar album!  Had this on an old cassette, and my Mexican ex- and I used to get the biggest kick out of it.  (We also loved dancing and singing along to Frenesi, on which LR shows truly amazing talents and bi-lingual versatility in the realm of Salsa).  My ex- and so many of my amigos always said that Linda Rhondstat really nailed the Mexican Spanish well.  And the singing, —Aiy, aiy, aiy!  Then they all turned me onto the version of Los Laureles by Miguel Acevez Mejia, (and his Malaguena and Tu y Las Nubes, whoah!) and a whole new (old) world of wonderfully fun fiesta-time songs opened up, making every party more memorable and lively.
How excellent to hear this gem on RP! and wow, really takes me back...
¡Juya! ¡Déjamalo ahí!
