Oh put it on, take it off real quick
on the bottom of the pile, I'm feelin' sick.
You never cross my mind, not by baby night, no-
you keep me in the beggar's guild.

So I sleep all day and I dream all night
with the bottle in my hand I take the devil's side.
I smile real big just to keep it hid
oh, the truth about my lack of will.

So I run like hell from the city's glow
I lose my name, I pass before the folks I used to know
If I go far away from the city grates
and the long reach of the government.

Oh all alone in a cold north sea,
in the blue sky above a plane flew over me.
The banner it pulled said "you are a fool,"
"did you really think you'd ever win?"

I'm taking off my dirty skin.
There is nothing to refute my sin.

I fear no one
I fear no one but you.
(Don't)
I lie only to tell the truth.
(No)

Oh the steep demands of the higher call
oh you (palm?) all the words so the cogs won't stall.
I burned my clothes and I gut my soul
and pretend that I was never born (ah yeah).

Oh my oh my, look what you have done
Spit your head out on the floor like you're the chosen one.
I give her my heart but she wanted no part
so I sold it to an antique store.

So I dug a hole four thousand miles down
To the center of the Earth where I will not be found.
Memories of the moon singing see you soon,
oh I was always partial to the sun.

I was picked up by two men of the law
They said we're taking you downtown, forget about your call.
Hell's no place for a wandering face
Go take it up with Beelzebub.

You laugh as you pull out the rug
I was never really much in love.

I fear no one
I fear no one but you.
(Don't)
I lie only to tell the truth.
(No)

It's encouraging that more musicians are playing acoustic instruments, but there is an annoying sameness to so many of these bands (The Lumineers, Of Monsters & Men, Elephant Revival, The Head & The Heart, Boy & Bear, etc.)  They're generally using very simple song structures and basic progressions (e.g. I - V - IV), and adding those "arm-swinging", "whoop-along", stomping types of choruses.  It's fine - music doesn't have to be complex to be good but it begins to seem formulaic and does kind of make it sound like "generic, coffee shop", hipster music, as was mentioned earlier in this thread.  Well, it's a "fun" sort of music and there's certainly worse stuff out there.

your comments are always spot on.
in this case, 5 yrs later, i'm just annoyed by the whole genre like this. but, yours is a great synopsis here.

This one reminds me of what's going on in Ottawa the past couple of weeks.

This is RP: A simple, annoyed comment, followed by an intelligent, articulate discussion and critique. I happen to love the "old timey" sound, but I appreciate a good analysis of why that music might not be everyone's cup of tea.

I read about those in history class. That was a popular musical style late last century, I think.

Agree.  There is a "sameness"/trend going on.  None of the bands mentioned are bad but it can get tired.
Actually RKGC is much more in line with My Morning Jacket...….another  good band but in its own "genre of sameness" category.

Always is that way. One band makes it somewhat big, and every other label and A&R out there tries to ride that to more $$$
Though, with the intertubes and all, this is getting to be a lower and lower threshold.

They look really like the french-american artists : Moriarty
Something about this song really moves me.  Is it the banjo? The plaintive vocals? Haunting lyrics?

Yes.

Another great RP discovery, looking forward to their next album. Who covers Dire Straits and nails it? RGC does! Lovely stuff.
Their Boys of Summer cover is pure gold too.

The music strangely is near the title of Francis Cabrel: The Bullfight (1994)

No, no, nothing like them - there are only two mentions of Hell and The Devil in this one. (I kid, I love 16HP.)
Generic Cold Brew Coffeeshop dross
Really like these guys - compare the intro and overall feel to "Your Rocky Spine" by (Canadian band) Great Lake Swimmers. Who you should also play...
Thanks RP for turning me on to this band!!! Among many others!

Great Lake Swimmers - Your Rocky Spine.
Green Grass and High Tides forever
First time I've heard this, and I like what I hear. I'll have to check these guys out.
Great album - thanks for introducing me to yet another great band RP!
First Aid Kit - Wolf
The Wailin Jennies - Arlington
Gustavo Santaolalla - Deportation
Roadkill Ghost Choir - Beggars Guild

Unexpected and brilliant seques
Too much `sounds like´...
Perhaps they drink Brewdog's most expensive beer.     (bizarre marketing idea which garnered worldwide headlines)

I also thought it was them at first, but the instruments are a bit different, not as present (?). In any case, I love them both :) {#Music}

wow ,, this song blows me away.  I hear a mixture of Great Lake Swimmers, Boy & Bear, Fleet Foxes and Elephant Revival.  HOWEVER, they have their own sound and it's totally kick ass.

Thank you RP ... always keeping an ear out for new stuff .. you guys rock

Sounds like 16Horse Power. Love the banjo!

...But secretly you dream of mastering the banjo as perfectly as this.

The dream, she haunts you.
I like anything that reminds me of the Waterboys.

If it looked like this it was an American Mink.  Don't sweat it - they're abundant and are even considered an invasive species in Europe.

I rated this song with the big 10 a while back with no comment...

everybody in my mushrooming multitude of churches be dancing buck ass naked all across the holy moly world like bowlegged gypsy muleskinners and B.F. Skinner...  we love this splendiferous song...  love sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll...
Like the LP Cover....Nice
Not bad!!

YES true!!!  too similar {#Eh}
Really sounds like Asaf Avidan ! :)
{#Daisy} ...... quite likeable
Has a hint of My Morning Jacket..like it.
This just made me stop anything I was doing and listen, and look up the band
That scream in the middle did it for me. It was ok, but now it's good!
I'm looking forward to the "old timey" sound trend to go away, again.

Good to hear Road Kill Ghost Choir on RP!
I was fully convinced this was Tallest Man on Earth.

Edit: It appears that RP doesn't really like TMoE. More's the pity. I particularly enjoy his song "The Gardener."
A little too deep into their idiom for me.  Gave it a 5.

I was thinking The Waterboys .

I like it too .
You have my attention Mr. Roadkill.
Mumfords nowhere as good as this. This is much close to Phosphorecent These guys use a banjo but don't bash you over the head with it. Missed them in Austin because they were scheduled on the day the festival was washed out. Lucky enough to catch them in Madison last week. Show was great if a bit short. The entire EP is great BTW.
