The "stolen" riff is about 400 years old. That's why Zep won the lawsuit.
12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus is one of my fav cds.
what's up with that last note... like ooops,... got it... wanna retake, nah it's good enough.
Can I say that Taurus is a load of bull? :o)

Actually, it's quite pleasant if inconsequential.
I predict the next song in the queue will be Stairway to Heaven.

Non-sequitur.  A sunflower's appearance is no one's intellectual property, except maybe God's.
And using the word "influence" here is biased ... the question is whether Page "copied" stuff, which he did, note for note, not in entirety but in sequences long enough to be obvious.

You're on drugs.
This gets a big fat 1 for the STH riff (even though it was written before that other POS) I hate STH so I hate this
I can't believe Led Zeppelin won this lawsuit!
I'm glad Bill likes Spirit, too.

Pink Floyd Hey You followed again today.  Hey RP:  revise your playlists!

Well, I didn't comment simply on Floyd - it was the combination of that and Zep....like a mash-up. It's there.
And Repo Man is one of my faves!

Borrowed riff or no, I can't figure out the high ranking on this yawner of a song. I guess the logic must be "Stairway to Heaven is a great song, and since the main chord progression of this song is the same, then THIS must be a great song." No, it doesn't work that way. If LZ stole the main melody, they improved upon it 1000 percent. Sorry Spirit fans. Solid 2 for me.

Indeed.  But it's great to hear it here for historical interest.

If I were the Spirit clan, I would consider an agreement with damages of one dollar, simply to have the larcenous Page acknowledge the source of the riff.

Page just spiced it up a bit.. {#Mrgreen}
And as we wind on down the road
Our checkbook's bigger than our soul
Not exactly the best song from this album. "Mechanical World" and Topanga Windows" surpass it. One of the few groups from that period that did not jump on the 1960s psychedelia bandwagon; Jethro Tull was the other.

Breaks my heart to have realized it but Page was one of the worst plagiarists of our times. Several egregious examples stand out: Bert Jansch's Black Water Side was ripped off completely when Page did Black Mountain Side and again when his arrangement of The Waggoners Lad was stolen for Brony Aur Stomp. Davey Grahams She Moved Through The Fair was turned into White Summer and Page had the balls to confabulate a story that he "learned Eastern Music styles while backpacking through India" which was precisely how Graham went on to innovate the DADGAD sitar style tuning Page ripped off. Jake Holme's Dazed and Confused was note for note theft. Breeden's lovely arrangement of the folk ballad Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, the Willie Dixon, the Howling Wolf, all of it stolen. It is clear that Page and his lawyers took the "fuck em, let em sue us" approach to doing business. The chickens are coming home to roost. Read this piece and go to the sources. Given his penchant for nicking other people's riffs (and in some cases the entire song incl. lyrics), the notion that Page "went to California" on S2H seems like a bit of a no brainer... Or maybe he was just Dazed and Confused at the time.

escalator to hell ...
I love this album.
Yep. Totally doesn't sound like the intro to Stairway at all. I was just mistaken to think that it was a cover version of Stairway when I heard those first few notes. Obviously my mistake.
Seems like the issue is as simple as not giving credit where it is due. It's very easy to consider you invented something, borrow some ideas and perhaps not totally realise it at the time. BUT, when challenged on that front, seriously, man up and do the right thing. There's no shame. Nearly everything is derivative. It's how invention works, how the creative process works.

Interesting take on the whole Taurus/Stairway to Heaven lawsuit with commentary by Rik Emmitt of Triumph (see around 3:43) Did Led Zeppelin steal Stairway to Heaven's opening notes?
Sounds like a cross between Stairway to Heaven and something off the PF The Wall album.

I once had a bustle in my hedgerow. Took me a fortnight to get the thistles out.
I didn't realize until just know how beautiful this song is.  I had listened to it on YouTube to get a sense of what it sounded like, but the better sound quality on RP made it possible to hear it in a way I hadn't before.
Pretty Good Guitar Lick.

Apparently Randy was never motivated to pursue a lawsuit during his lifetime - after his tragic drowning those in charge of his estate did.
For a second there, I thought this might have been some hipster 'Stairway to Heaven'

In all honesty, I really don't think this is a rip off. It may have influenced S2H but a blatant rip off would be to use an entire riff and call it your own.

Take Paul Simon, surrounds himself with artists, gets them to jam then rips it all off as his own work.

I really don't think you can come up with an original piece without it being a direct influence from the music you're interested in.

The only way to come up with something original is to never listen to any music ever.
The ruling was a bit of a joke, but then again, so is waiting 45 years for starting a plagiarism lawsuit.
Even though they should have gotten permission, I'm glad Zep did something with this dirge.
sounds familiar{#Think}
@thewiseking. Intreresting like to article thxs.
Funny how everyone is dogging Zep for thievery of this song, or rather significant portions of its structure, since Cheap Trick did the same thing with "Nature's Way" for their song "The Flame".

Indeed it's a dubious honor for a band to be ripped off by more well-known, more successful, (maybe not better), bands.

Anyway, I am just getting in to Spirit, largely because of their rotation on RP. I really, really like the tracks that I didn't previously know. Thanks Bill and Rebecca for the education.
The latest spin—the suit may be settled for $1, but Zep may have to give a share of the songwriting credit to Spirit (i.e.-the estate of Randy Wolfe a/k/a/ Randy California).

Had they not splintered right as their best album was being released and had they performed at Woodstock like they were going to (until their manager advised them otherwise) - who knows?....
I never liked Stairway to Heaven, but, in general, Spirit was vastly under-appreciated.

If they were so bad, you can't help wandering why you went to a second concert. BTW, I'm no big fan of LZ.

Yeah, Bill honestly should never, ever play a friggin’ Led Zeppelin song but instead play the originals!

You are crazy Relayer, it is a 100% RIP OFF. But then again how many other songs did LZ get busted for of ripping off the original artists. In the history of Rock & Roll, I do believe Led Zeppelin has the record! LZ was an average band at best. One terrible singer and a guitarist that loves to rip off other people’s work.

https://www.musictimes.com/articles/6250/20140520/7-songs-other-than-stairway-to-heaven-that-led-zeppelin-stole.htm And this does not even include “stairway”!

The members of Led Zeppelin are dirtbags! https://www.npr.org/2014/10/26/358903514/did-led-zeppelin-plagiarize-stairway-a-penn-judge-will-decide

At best, Led Zeppelin is an ok COVER BAND: https://ultimateclassicrock.com/led-zeppelin-lawsuit-stairway-to-heaven/

Spirit released this song in 1968. Led Zeppelin released Stairway to Heaven in '71. I believe that Led Zeppelin recently settled a copyright infringement suit with Randy California's estate.

Never heard this side so Spirit.  Cool stuff.

)

A great summer '68 concert this was!

Yeah, once you hear this you’ll never have the same respect for Led Zeppelin again.

No question the time I was Spirit in concert was a better show than either time I saw Led Zeppelin!
So great hearing this being played.

Before all the info on the inter webs, and lawsuits and all, when I finally scored this then out-of-print album in the mid '70s, and being a big LZ fan I heard the Stairway reference immediately.
yak!
These guys were amazing. Everyone knows "Fresh Garbage", "The Morning Will Come" & "Natures Way", but check out "Ice" & "Clear" from the album of the same name. It was very unusual for a band in 1969 to have that kind of range, at least to show it on an album that actually got produced.
The next song could be Stairway to Heaven...
Thanks for playing the song - lots of news about the lawsuit against Led Zep for stealing the intro for Stairway to Heaven....
My brother is a Taurus--hell of a musician, too.
The lawsuit song!
