Borrowed riff or no, I can't figure out the high ranking on this yawner of a song. I guess the logic must be "Stairway to Heaven is a great song, and since the main chord progression of this song is the same, then THIS must be a great song." No, it doesn't work that way. If LZ stole the main melody, they improved upon it 1000 percent. Sorry Spirit fans. Solid 2 for me.

Not exactly the best song from this album. "Mechanical World" and Topanga Windows" surpass it. One of the few groups from that period that did not jump on the 1960s psychedelia bandwagon; Jethro Tull was the other.

Yep. Totally doesn't sound like the intro to Stairway at all. I was just mistaken to think that it was a cover version of Stairway when I heard those first few notes. Obviously my mistake.
Seems like the issue is as simple as not giving credit where it is due. It's very easy to consider you invented something, borrow some ideas and perhaps not totally realise it at the time. BUT, when challenged on that front, seriously, man up and do the right thing. There's no shame. Nearly everything is derivative. It's how invention works, how the creative process works.

I didn't realize until just know how beautiful this song is. I had listened to it on YouTube to get a sense of what it sounded like, but the better sound quality on RP made it possible to hear it in a way I hadn't before.

Funny how everyone is dogging Zep for thievery of this song, or rather significant portions of its structure, since Cheap Trick did the same thing with "Nature's Way" for their song "The Flame".

I never liked Stairway to Heaven, but, in general, Spirit was vastly under-appreciated.

These guys were amazing. Everyone knows "Fresh Garbage", "The Morning Will Come" & "Natures Way", but check out "Ice" & "Clear" from the album of the same name. It was very unusual for a band in 1969 to have that kind of range, at least to show it on an album that actually got produced.
