But what I usually hear is who he sounds like -- someone from the 70s here, someone from the 90s there. It's not even that he borrows from musical styles, nothing wrong with that. It's that the songs themselves sound like other people's songs.

A lovely album, it rewards with more listening. Wish I had even a poofteenth of his talent.
There's some real talent here. 
I like it when just about anybody adds a little twang to his music... even Beck.
