Innocence was better than Experience.

Interesting comment. I've found that I've been bored with their material for quite some time. Frustrating, predictable stuff. Re-inventing yourself, like Robert Plant, regardless of commercial success, is totally commendable. Putting out lame material to bank another million or two is, well, lame.

I was a huge fan up to and including "Achtung Baby."  They completely lost me after that, and that makes me sad.

Songs Of Innocence - just gets better and better with every listen.
Best U2 since All That You Can't Leave Behind.

The HBO Paris shows are amazing. - I found 3 of them.

4->5 Its not that bad.
It's just that you expect to get an excelent album everytime Bono opens his mouth and this album is not that excelent that it inhabits my playlist.

I'm a huge U2 fan (haters, suck it! said with love :-) ). But I2 was not particularly fond of the iTunes snafu, nor overwhelmed by the album at first. However, I have given it time, a second chance, and having seen them now at the Garden a few weeks ago - damn spectacular show, that. And this song, in particular, is growing on me the more I hear it. Look, the band is past it's glory days on the trajectory all bands take, and they've had a fairly amazing run - for them to put something still listen-worthy after all this time is still pretty good (how many of you Stones fans out there are dropping Steel Wheels on your turntable these days? Eh). So I give them credit for effort and decent output. Plus, the live show is still first rate and then some. Plus, haters suck it! U2 still lives.

I agree with most of your points regarding the new U2 album.  The iTunes thing was a non-story for the first-world-umbrage crowd.  Songs of Innocence requires a good listening like any album, by any artist, before a full opinion can be formed.  This one fits right in with the U2 canon (as have all of their albums over their lengthy career).  It sounds like that show at the Garden was phenomenal.  This is no surprise.

I'm not so sure, however, about the ageism that creeps into your argument.  U2 is not looking to be given a little credit for being "decent" as they dodder off into old age.  They are producing at a high level and evolving with their sound.  They are going to the places that they want to go with their sound.  We get to come along if we want.  "Glory Days" is a concept for those who inhabit the past themselves.

...and why you gotta take a swing at the Stones?  Steel Wheels?  Heck, Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon, and (especially) A Bigger Bang all make it into the player these days.  As do all of the discs put out by U2 in the same time interval. There are people in their 20's who are older than Jagger and Bono.

Neither of these bands is living in the past.

rather than saying "haters gonna hate" and all that, it would be easier and must faster to simply acknowledge that some artists and their music are polarising people: either big love or hate. I guess it's a form of talent to be able to touch everyone to an extreme and leave very few indifferent or with "only" mild excitement.

Regarding this song, for me it had now reached "1", started at 3 but really no, it doesn't grow on me, just the exact opposite :)
Once again a good song which keeps rising to even higher after more listening. After seeing them this past Summer you can still hear and see the true passion. Thank you Bill for playing good tunes for us non haters too. Peace!

but not for me!

I always come to the U2 comments for all of the hate.  Once again, you did not disappoint RP listeners.  I especially liked the "turgid dross".  I bet that guy was proud of himself.  {#No}

More U2 Bill! Let's work these folks into a frenzy.

Glad you liked it! Is this from the album that was so bad they had to force people into having it?

One of the better songs on the album - Bono actually has some passion in his voice.  This is unlike other tracks on the album which overall I have to admit I'm disappointed with (and a bit bummed about). The band's playing is excellent, but the singing just falls flat overall and doesn't match the passion of the music (not this track however).  ....of course IMHO.

Coldplay are far better. This is turgid dross.
Darn it! First time hearing this (and not liking it) and I thought to myself, "Please don't let the be U2."
This is a great song for saying goodbye to a special person...

From Rolling Stone:

 U2 have unveiled the intimate cover image for their new LP, Songs of Innocence, which will be released in physical form on October 13th. The black-and-white photo, shot by Glen Luchford, shows drummer Larry Mullen Jr. shielding his 18-year-old son in a protective embrace. The band unveiled the image via their website on Friday morning, with frontman Bono explaining how the cover symbolizes the personal themes of the album. "We've always been about community in U2, about family and friends," he says. "Songs Of Innocence is the most intimate album we've ever made. With this record, we were looking for the raw, naked and personal, to strip everything back. . . holding on to your own innocence is a lot harder than holding on to someone else's." The visuals are also meant to reflect the band's formative years in Dublin. A statement accompanying the cover reveal draws parallels between the image and the covers for their 1979 debut, Boy, and 1983's War – both of which featured the face of child Peter Rowen, the younger brother of Bono's childhood friend Guggi.

These guys have managed to do stadium bombast for a very long time.  Some times I like it, some times I want something more intimate. On first listen, this kind of works for me.

Too bad U2 still can't make good music. Mediocre at best.

Sounds like a Pepsi commercial.
Really digging the searing, pain-ridden, heartbreaking lyrics in this album, and how the music marches in ways only U2 can make it do!

Excellent playlist for workouts, too!

The cynics are beginning to sound a little sound-byte-ish anymore......
