Same. I love 10,000 Maniacs and I like this cover, but Iris DeMent's original is something else. This would be better if it didn't have David Byrne's guest vocal diluting the purity of Natalie Merchant's voice. Still, give me Iris every time.

Interesting segue. Poi Dog's leader Frank Orrall's stage presence always reminded me of Byrne. Interesting version, kinda grows on you.

Good GOSH, Ms.Merchant was SOOooo good inna band setup. Solo, don't really care for much. Coupla good pcs, that's it. IMO, of course! Odd, how the diff is so vast.

As someone lucky enough to be at the open mikes in KC where Iris first played this song, it's kind of crazy to see how far it's reached. But I have to echo others here. Though Byrne and Merchant are wonderful musicians, and their taste in songs is obvious, this performance is cringeworthy.
