All my bags are packed
I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin'
It's early morn
The taxi's waitin'
He's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome
I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Ev'ry place I go, I'll think of you
Ev'ry song I sing, I'll sing for you
When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time
Let me kiss you
Then close your eyes
I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times, I won't have to say

Oh, kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

But, I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Was this referring to people going off to fight in Vietnam, bcs the uncertainty of return seems to speak to that? The lyric transcription is not very good (“bring your wedding ring,” versus “wear your...”). Like the top poster, this was my first exposure to the concept of love, outside family. I used to listen to my handheld AM radio in bed, to tunes like this, the Stones, Donovan, 5th Dimension, and the Shocking Blue, etc.

The song pulls at my heartstrings, too. John Denver didn't originally write it as a protest song, but PPM's version certainly was interpreted in that vein, and maybe they meant for that to be the case? I was a 13 year old boy, quite clueless to what was going on outside of my small world, yet I still heard this as a statement on the war.

I was 12yrs old when this was released.   Low power TOP 40  WMCA 570am  NYC  (The Good Guys)  used to play this a lot.  High power TOP 10 WABC 770am NYC, seemed to avoid playing this song.
Great song, written by none other than John Denver in 1966.
10 simply for the memories. 11 years old, life was so simple then...
Wonderful tune, excellent bass, harmony, - it’s a classic amongst any classics. 💯
Excellent choice for an era that is starting to compare to the Vietnam era.
It's just unfair.
At 69, I can't summon up the energy I had in '69.
But three bars of this song can bring back all the pain of every time me and my then lady were parted...
Sigh.

This came out when I was a young teenager. I listened and listened to the song so I could copy down the lyrics. Life was a complete mystery to me, especially "love". Songs like this fueled my romantic fantasies. Fun memories of innocence.
Haven’t heard this one in ages Thanks so much
One has to be fairly old in order to really appreciate PP&M. They were insanely popular in the sixties among those trying to establish an alternative, more open minded culture. Their sound became a precursor to the folk rock era and contributed to the popularity of early Dylan, Donovan, and so many others who would stretch musical boundaries.
Classic....what's not to like? .....9
I'm not really a fan, however, someone should leave a comment!
