Was this referring to people going off to fight in Vietnam, bcs the uncertainty of return seems to speak to that? The lyric transcription is not very good (“bring your wedding ring,” versus “wear your...”).
Like the top poster, this was my first exposure to the concept of love, outside family. I used to listen to my handheld AM radio in bed, to tunes like this, the Stones, Donovan, 5th Dimension, and the Shocking Blue, etc.
This came out when I was a young teenager. I listened and listened to the song so I could copy down the lyrics. Life was a complete mystery to me, especially "love". Songs like this fueled my romantic fantasies. Fun memories of innocence.

One has to be fairly old in order to really appreciate PP&M. They were insanely popular in the sixties among those trying to establish an alternative, more open minded culture. Their sound became a precursor to the folk rock era and contributed to the popularity of early Dylan, Donovan, and so many others who would stretch musical boundaries.

The song pulls at my heartstrings, too. John Denver didn't originally write it as a protest song, but PPM's version certainly was interpreted in that vein, and maybe they meant for that to be the case? I was a 13 year old boy, quite clueless to what was going on outside of my small world, yet I still heard this as a statement on the war.
