They've stolen the moon
The magic is gone
And there in its place
A black midnight sun
The darkness is frightening
And love is denied
They've stolen the moon
God only knows why
The stars have lost their daughter
The devil's thieves have won
And there in her place
A black midnight sun

I looked out across
The river today
Saw a city in the fog and an old church town where the seagulls play
Saw the sad shire horses walking home
In the sodium light
Two priests on the ferry
October geese on a cold winter's night
All this time
The river flowed
Endlessly
To the sea
Two priests came 'rounf
Our house tonight
One young, one old
To offer prayers for the dying to serve the final rite
One to learn, one to teach
Which way the cold wind blows
And fussing and flapping in priestly black
Like a murder of crows
All this time
The river flowed
Endlessly
To the sea
If I had my way
I'd take a boat from the river
And I'd bury the old man
I'd bury him at sea
Blessed are the poor
For they shall inherit the Earth
Better to be poor than a fat man in the eye of a needle
As these words were spoken I swear
I hear the old man laughing
"What good is a used up world, and how could it be worth having?"
All this time
The river flowed
Endlessly
Like a silent tear
All this time
The river flowed
Father, if Jesus exists
Then how come he never lived here?
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah

Teachers told us
The Romans built this place
They built a wall and a temple and an
Edge of the Empire garrison town
They lived and they died
They prayed to their Gods
But the stone Gods did not make a sound
And their empire crumbled, 'til all that was left
Were the stones the workmen found
All this time
The river flowed
In the falling light
Of a Northern sun
If i had my way
Take a boat from the river
Men go crazy in congregations
They only get better one by one
Yeah, yeah (one by one)

Yeah, yeah (one by one)
Yeah, yeah (one by one)
Yeah, yeah (I looked out across)
Yeah, yeah (The river today)
Yeah, yeah (Saw a city in the fog and an old church town)
Yeah, yeah (Where the seagulls play)
Yeah, yeah (Saw the sad shire horses walking home)
Yeah, yeah (In the sodium light)
Yeah, yeah (Two priests on the ferry)
Yeah, yeah (October geese on a cold winter's night)

She may contain the urge to run away
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Cetirizine, your fever's gripped me again
Never kisses, all you ever send are full stops
Do you know where the wild things go?
They go along to take your honey
Break down, now weep, build up breakfast, now let's eat
My love, my love, love, love
Muscle to muscle and toe to toe
The fear has gripped me but here I go
My heart sinks as I jump up
Your hand grips hand and my eyes shut
And oh, oh
Oh-ooh
Do you know where the wild things go?
They go along to take your honey
Break down, now sleep, build up breakfast, now let's eat
My love, my love, lovely
She bruises, coughs, she splutters pistol shots
Hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
She's morphine, queen of my vaccine
My love, my love, love, love
Muscle to muscle and toe to toe
The fear has gripped me but here I go
My heart sinks as I jump up
Your hand grips hand and my eyes shut
And oh, oh
Oh-ooh, ooh
She may contain the urge to run away
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Germolene, disinfect the scene
My love, my love, love, love
And please don't go, I love you so, my lovely

Please don't go, please don't go
I love you so, I love you so
Please don't go, please don't go
I love you so, I love you so
Please break my heart
Please don't go, please don't go
I love you so, I love you so
Please don't go, please don't go
I love you so, I love you so
Please break my heart
Please don't go, I'll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you so, I love you so
Please don't go, I'll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you so, I love you so
Please don't go, I'll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you so, I love you so
Please don't go, I'll eat you whole
I love you so

A couple weeks ago I was in Austin, Texas, and had a night with nothing to do so I searched to see what live music I could find. I found an artist named Max Gomez with Taylor Rae opening. I thought I recognized the name but couldn't remember from where.
She played a great set; she's really talented and has an incredible voice. Her guitar playing was pretty good too. Eventually I finally remembered that I heard this cover on RP and that's where I recognized her name from. It was a very small but great venue and I had a chance to chat with her at the merch table after the show. She mentioned that she was about to play this song next but had run out of time. I'll have to keep an eye out for her and hopefully catch it next time.
I had never heard of Max Gomez but he was awesome. Reminded me of John Prine. It was a total gamble when I bought the tickets, but it ended up being an awesome and memorable show. It's always worth giving live music a chance!
The β€œother” Taylor! PLAY FOREVER!

Great sparse cover of a great song. Good to play this and the original back to back
LOVE this cover.
Brutally mediocre. Covers like this just make me wish I was listening to the original.

Interesting take on the song! It's kind of strange to be able to understand the lyrics in this version....

"take"?
How is different or interesting?

for...? nice version to sing by a camp fire with friends nothing more than that.

Why take a GREAT song and abuse it....?
I am adoring this on first listen. Beautiful.

Sweet voice and lovely touch on the guitar though - I think she takes this somewhere worthwhile.

Love everything about this and her!

And this is a problem, why? Great tune, beautiful voice and, not bad on the eyes, either!

Sorry, I'm getting a bit picky.  I like it!

The playlist is getting a bit tight there.

I quite like it.
Interesting how you can remove all the musical gymnastics in the original and it's still a damn funky song.
alt-j create a very intimate relationship with crowds , I can imagine Joe gently announcing that they had Taylor with them this evening to play Breeze blocks, yep, this a good cover.
I love how this song can be stretched an bend in so many ways without losing any strength

The first time I heard this I liked it enough to get off my arse and walk all the way to the computer and look at who it was. The second time I added it to my wish list.

it's ok. interesting, i suppose.

i don't need to hear it every day, though, please.
Well this is a very easy first listen 7. Alt-J isn't everyone's taste and this probably won't be either - but hey, I like it
First play?

I know this from the original by Alt-J, also from RP. This cover is an even more gentle acoustic version, I like it!
Good cover. I normally don't rate things unless they make me stop and listen, and this one did. Solid 7.
A lot of nice new tunes these days!
