Now deep in the heart of a lonely kid
Who suffered so much for what he did
They gave this ploughboy his fortune and fame
Since that day he ain't been the same

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
And he got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again

I've got fire water right on my breath
And the doctor warned me I might catch a death
Said, "You can make it in your disguise
Just never show the fear that's in your eyes"

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
He got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again

Now if he says that he's afraid
Take him at his word
And for the price that the poor boy has paid
He gets to sing just like a bird, oh, ooh ooh ooh

Your brow is sweatin' and your mouth gets dry
Fancy people go driftin' by
The moment of truth is right at hand
Just one more nightmare you can stand

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might
And he got caught in the spotlight
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again, hmm hmm
You wanna try it once again, hmm hmm
Please don't make him stop, hmm hmm
Let him take it from the top, hmm hmm
Let him start all over again

Are you saying Levon Helm had access to a time machine? Hmmmm.

This changes everything.

the feedback in the middle of the song drops this to a 4

I agree!  Gotta MUTE this one........  {#Crashcomp}

Danko acts this as much as sings it on "The Last Waltz". Superb.

"The Band"

How presumptuous

Sounds like a bad Elvis Costello
Fantastic song from a fantastic band...

The recent-vintage remake is excellent! So good, in fact, I'm considering making it a permanent addition to my collection.

Also, check out the Festival Express DVD.

I thought this was Phish at first...not digging the vocals...and the feedback is horrible...kinda glad I missed this band way back when.

Considering the original album was cut in 1972 you may want to rethink your statement.

Recordings of live peformances of the Band... great albums (2) and a super tribute to some awesome musicians!

I still have the vinyl stored away.

I'd always thought that the feedback was intentional. It seems to appear at about the same point during the refrain. Feedback would almost make sense, given the lyrics.
Popcorn and a spinning carnival ride come to mind.  I'd rather not see a bear on a unicycle while this music plays
Yawn, hope it stops soon!!

AFTER he heard about them from George Harrison, who was hangin' round Big Pink during the recording of that seminal LP.

But yeah, I prefer the studio version, for sure.

Eff yeah!

I'm still curious why people who whine about the quality of a clip (while ignoring the quality of the song) bother to listen to RP in the first place.

What a great album.
Ooops - I mean the ALBUM named in honor of Def Leppard.
I like it only because they named the song in honor of Def Leppard.
A 9. Whooo! Trying to read but RP won't let me alone! Thanks guys, never a bad time for some Band.
Wait... I was gonna rate this really low cause the intro was sucko-barfo in a jam band kinda way... and it's the Band. I am confused. But I still don't like this. In fact, I think I hate it.
Great great song from a great live Band. Seeing them at the Arie Crown Theater in 1972 was certainly one of the highlights of my concert experiences. But... as almost always happens, when Bill plays the live version I prefer the studio version (this song, for example) and when he plays the studio, I prefer the live (Astronomy Dominie for example). I guess it's a matter of what gets uploaded. Or he and I are orthogonal in that space.
I am sooo glad that this song ends soon. Yuck.

The sound quality of the recording is horrible. The screeches of feedback scattered throughout the song make any other judgements about its value irrelevant. Never, ever play that again without a warning beforehand. OUCH!
No kidding. Is this live? If it's a studio and they got feed back on the final cut... sheesh. Must've run outta money. Either that or they should have fired the engineer. And the mastering engineer. And the producer. And everyone who heard this between the studio and production line. Now, if it's live. Eh... it happens. Still, it's a good tune. Not my favorite, but pretty good. --edit-- Nevermind. It's live. Either that or they had a lot of engineers and they loved it.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THIS SUCKS!!!
As long as its live and The Band I can live with some feedback!

This was an original, unique group if there ever was one. Never been a group like them - before or since. Elvis Costello has said as much. 4 singers, 3 songwriters, everyone switched up their instruments and roles in the group frequently, they didn't follow the musical trends of the day. And this song is amazing.

mic check ...

I wish I didn't have to hear it, because this feels like a bog pocket of gas working its way through my colon. ouch.

NÀ No matter what, I just don't like these guys. Something just doesn't do it about their sound. It's like too watered down and borrowed from too many others. hmm. not unique i guess
You have it backwards, there are a lot of bands that have watered down and borrowed The Band's sound.
I always smile when he sings "and for the price he's paid he gets to sing like a bird" -Rick Danko hardly sings like a bird
