You Also Can't Keep Your Doctor

Nov. 3, 2013 6:37 p.m. ET

Everyone now is clamoring about Affordable Care Act winners and losers. I am one of the losers.

My grievance is not political; all my energies are directed to enjoying life and staying alive, and I have no time for politics. For almost seven years I have fought and survived stage-4 gallbladder cancer, with a five-year survival rate of less than 2% after diagnosis. I am a determined fighter and extremely lucky. But this luck may have just run out: My affordable, lifesaving medical insurance policy has been canceled effective Dec. 31.

...
Before the Affordable Care Act, health-insurance policies could not be sold across state lines; now policies sold on the Affordable Care Act exchanges may not be offered across county lines.

Which Top Hospitals Take Your Health Insurance Under Obamacare?

Americans who sign up for Obamacare will be getting a big surprise if they expect to access premium health care that may have been previously covered under their personal policies. Most of the top hospitals will accept insurance from just one or two companies operating under Obamacare, Watchdog.org reports.

We use #'s 4 and 18 depending on what's wrong.  Under Obamacare we would have to pick just one hospital, and as the article states, its not clear which plan works with which hospital based upon info on the website.  Assuming you can even log on to the website.

Consumers, too, will struggle with the new system. Many exchanges don't even list the insurance companies on their web sites. Some that do, like California, don't provide names of doctors or hospitals.

I am smarter than a beagle though,seriously.

I just wanted to wish Kurt peace and let the uncouth individuals that I named know that I didn't appreciate getting thrown under the bus and onto the ice flow during the time of my most stressful need for a little support.

I don't feel comfortable here anymore and hoped my comment would make them think about the way they treat others over minor disagreements.

I'm sorry if I upset you.

Hey there bro,

I think the bigger point is that naming the names is the unnecessary part that offends most.

We all pretty much know who pushes whose buttons which way and why.  And in many cases, we let them get to us.

Yet we somehow always find a way to get past it to keep better things going here.

This too shall pass ...

Thanks for calling me Bro,it really helped. You're right,I shouldn't have mentioned names, especially Islander. He's cool,he just jumped on the bandwagon after someone else started it.Other than that he's always been cool.

Bokey, I have commented on some of your late night texts.  I hope that doesn't put me in your RP "shithole" category.

You carry a larger burden than many of us could bear.  You're a good man, imo.  RP IS made up of individuals with none of us being prefect. You are welcome in my "E-house" anytime.

Every generation is different. Shaped by the challenges and opportunities of the time. I consider myself very fortunate that I came of age during a period of relative peace and prosperity that saw very little military conflict, and a robust enough military that conscription never came up. I am thankful for that. I also recognize that service is valuable, so I have done and continue to do many things in my life are service oriented and ad value back to my community and my country.  No, no one shoots at me during this kind of service, but that does not mean that it has no value.

My generation was supposed to be the slackers - so caught up in our video games we would never amount to anything. You were a bunch of pot smoking hippies who would never amount to anything. Kids now are so caught up with their iPhones they can't even talk to each other, they will never amount to anything. Yet we always seem to manage. I've managed to provide for myself pretty well, and at the same time work with some great Millenials on a water purification project for Honduras. I'm pretty sure they have smoked Pot, as have I, and yet, like you, we all manage to do okay.

There will always be generational tensions. Resources will need to be expended in ways that will not always be popular. But if we focus on the good, and work toward what is right, things will fall into place. I'm not naive, nor am I apathetic, I'm optimistic twinged with a bit of realism. It won't ever be 'perfect', but it will be good. As long as good people are willing to put forth their efforts, we will move lurchingly forward through our mistakes.

Lastly, for the record, it's not a warning against playing with fire that irked me, it was the "Apathy has no quarter or safe refuge, nor will they hear the bullet." comment. Maybe it's my new age sensitivity or the proximity to other more recent and direct threats of violence, but it rubbed me wrong.  Perhaps it was a joke or an off the cuff bit, but it fell flat on my ears when uttered along with calls for a rationed fact based debate. I'll let it go and assume it was just my misinterpretation.

An off the cuff take would be best in my intended context.  If it helps any, the bullet in the sense I was using would be coming from a government agent, not some dysfunctional whacko.

There is no way for me to make a nice little statement about what a real threat I think of the way apathy presents itself today.  I see it as the majority position in our country and point to the widespread acceptance of supposed governemnt incompetency.and real corruption as proof.  Expectations have never been lower in what we expect from our governement in terms of performance and delivering services.  Is this acceptance of incompetence a generational thing in its current form ?  Is it a political divide ?  Is it an educational divide ?  Obviously, I'm leaning towards the generational thought, but know better than to put it all on that alone.

Krauthammer points to the choice of looking at the behaviour of our government.  When the choice is between incompetency and conspiracy, he always chooses incompetency.  I recognize that he has had a front row seat in looking at our government.  Polls point to rising levels of disatisfaction with our government, but the ones that matter (voting) show the opposite.  But there is a new dynamic in play.  The lying coming from our government has never been greater than since Nam, and it is being tolerated to the point of acceptance, and I think that is rooted in apathy and largely due to the lack of exposure to anything like this in succeeding generations.

I took a peak at the progress of this thread while composing this thought and see that you are waist deep in this very subject (managing generational perceptions) on a first hand basis.  Between Rotary and the very nature of what you do professionally, you might have some insight into all this.
