Thanks Bill.

I'm thinking if my iPad Air can't multi-task when the app is filling the cache, the app is pretty processor intensive. Does it need to use so much processor power? I don't know. It obviously takes more processor power than any other app I use. Maybe it could be made more efficient. That the display doesn't dim is a clue about it's efficiency.

And yes, I've reinstalled the app on my the iPad Air and the 4s iPhone several times. A new install makes no difference.

I'm the developer of the app. The app is not really processor intensive, but it's definitely memory intensive when filling a big cache. A couple of nasty bug (I'm still trying to fix one) makes this more critical. Anything more than 4 hours can make the OS kill the app if something goes wrong, especially true on 4s, of course, when the processor (or the lack of it) plays a role.
I'm sorry for the problem but I had some report of the crashes, but the logs didn't report anything because it was not the app crashing but the OS killing it (so no trace of it on the log, only a suddenly stop).
I'm trying to fix the problem, but it's complex and not easy to reproduce (not always the memory pressure is enough to crash the app)... I have a beta running, if you want to help test it (and you are on iOS8) just send me an email at gt_AT_iltofa.com and I'll have Apple send an invite to test.

As a separate note, the display don't dim as a choice. The app have lyrics and the slideshow, so to dim the screen can be really boring. We decided to ask the system to not dim the screen because, if you want to preserve battery, you can simply leave the app in background (ie: return to the "finder") and the device will dim the screen normally.

Again, sorry for the problems... activating the caching system for 4 hours or less should not manifest any problem. Hopefully. 😉

More on the iphone behavior. Filling cache with nothing running in the background results in the app shutting down within as soon as 45 seconds, and sometimes taking as long as 3 minutes. I managed to restart the app over and over again until I got 67% of three hours before heading to work Friday. The iphone played fine from cache until the cache was empty. It's interesting that the screen does not dim to save power while the app is playing from cache and on the main screen. Returning to the home screen while the app plays from cache in the background results in the screen dimming normally, until it occasionally wakes up for some reason, only to dim again as normal, then repeat this process.

Unfortunately I won't have the patience to spend a couple of hours daily rebooting the app to fill the cache, so unless I can come up with a solution, I'll be back to using data at work which gives me somewhere between 40 and 60 hours of play per month. I really wish this awesome feature worked but I suspect it's just too processor intensive for these older phones.

Further experimenting with the ipad.

Running in cell+wifi mode (not filling cache) works fine. Multitasking works fine while playing music.

Running in wifi mode while filling cache appears to work fine but no multitasking is allowed. The apps can run in the background, but don't try using them. The first clue something is wrong is when the music begins to break up and pages won't load in Safari. Eventually the app will crash and take everything down.

Running in wifi mode, once cache is at 100%, multitasking seems to be allowed.

So it appears the app doesn't play well with others while filling the cache.

The short story is the app is still crashing and bringing any other app that's running with it. The phone is sluggish and unhappy while the app is running.

I finally tried the new app. Downloaded it last night and started play this morning to load the cache, hoping to continue listening at work where I have no wifi.

Unfortunately it doesn't work. Sometimes it begins to play (the same song) as soon as I start the app, but is otherwise totally unresponsive. Then it crashes. Sometimes it allows me to configure it, then begins to play, then crashes and takes any other open apps with it.

Rebooted/reset phone.

Gonna have to use my data plan with the original app until this gets sorted out.

I wish I could agree with you but I do not have the same experience with the iPad version. Tested on multiple iPads.  It doesn't crash like the iTouch but as I write this the iPad app buffered to 84% then quit playing. The cache dropped back to 70%, Buffering (0%), whirling icon and cache icon is cloud and disk but no audio.  Stopping, restarting, closing the app, restarting, does nothing to restore audio playback.  Power cycled the iPad, reloaded the app.  No audio, same conditions as above.  Turned off the cache, stopped and restarted, music plays.

Since the RP system "knows" what the songs will be for the next day or so (barring intervention on the whim of Bill), it is able to just, yes, download from the future stream. I guess that's one way of putting it.

I think that it does crash without the cache enabled, but I have not tested it enough to verify this.  During testing the app crashed repeatedly and appeared to finally stay running after several config changes, but at that point I was frustrated and gave up and didn't care anymore.

T-Mob will throttle you after awhile - which may not matter if you have a smaller stream (< 128) or one of the ogg's.

Maybe it is time to stop advertising this feature.  It seems unlikely that this would pass even the basic of beta testing.

As much as I desire this app to work, I may have to go, as others have, and use ootunes.
