i was surprised how fast the numbers came down. will they up as fast if i stop taking the statin? is it possible to reduce the dosage and maintain good numbers?

4-6 weeks for full effect, which is maintained as long as statin is taken... then 4-6 weeks to return to baseline once statin is stopped... the dose you need is based on the cholesterol lowering potential of the particular statin you are using compared to the % cholesterol lowering that you need from your baseline... so the answer to your second question is "it depends."

Paging Dr Dmax. Paging Dr Dmax. This time last year my total cholesterol was 279. I started Simvistatin about 4 or 5 weeks before I was tested this year. Total went down to 143. Does that sound right? I'm surprised by how quickly it dropped. Now that it is in the normal range, do I need to continue the meds? Is the a lower dose option? I will discuss this with my doctor, butthat may not be for a few weeks.

Sounds great.  If you stop the statin the cholesterol will go back up. You could try a lower dose and see what happens, but you'd have to go get labs again 4-6 weeks after.  What is your LDL? That number is more important than the total cholesterol. I know you weren't asking me
