Cards and letters meant to bring cheer
Now bring me sorrow, now bring such tears
The words fell off the paper
So I'm gonna sweep away each line
But it's gonna take a long, long time

Streetlight standin' alone all night in the rain
Shinin' for no one, shinin' all in vain
I'm gonna stop wasting my love like this because it's a crime
But it's gonna take a long, long time

Call the doctor when your body hurts
But when the pain is in your soul, hey man nothin' works

Smoke from a cigarette coming underneath my door
Just like your memory sneakin' up on me some more
I'm gonna be all right and leave this heartache behind
But it's gonna take a long, long time

Lipstick on a glass
Somebody wants to look pretty
And wants to forget the past
Someday these tangled thoughts are gonna all unwind
But it's gonna take a long, long time

sounds like an old mic, trying to sound classic by sounding like an old style recording, but a bit too overmixed

then I'm odd too. Utmost respect for Buddy Miller but his wife, not so much.
This is SEXY AS HELL!
I'm waiting for that Danny Gatton solo to kick in
Mmmmmm, jazz, nice! {#Cool}
thanx Bill
For me, Jill Barber hits the spot this singer is aiming at.

Agreed!
This tune always gets me a little worked up.   Very sexy... steamy...  gets my mind wandering and my body aching for a slow, dirty dance.

Too bad I'm at work and my husband's in another city.    (sigh.....)

{#Hug}
Great! The past few hours have been absolutely excellent, with mostly new (to me) stuff too.

I wish I could find some tour dates!  I'd definitely want to go see them perform....both of them.
instantly evocative of a Rickie Lee Jones, Love it!
Proof there is so much superb quality music and songs, on has to tune into Radio Paradise to listen for it, thank you DJ. :)

I'm not much for faux naive art, but that cover illustration is just lovely.

I'm generally not interested in much of that genre either, but that particular artist does do some interesting work.  Good tune here, as well.
Wow, this sure is a tasty little jazzy thing! Has a certain Jazz Amidst Degrading Circumstances-kinda Tom Waits vibe — another listener mentioned him too, I now see after already posting this — all over it and that makes me love it in a funky dive kinda way, yeah!

Was thinking the same exact thing. Gave it a nine also.

She just resonates with me today.  Didn't hear it on this track, but listening to Gasoline & Matches now and have the chair dancing feeling like I was jammin' to X (and Xene's voice).  Grrrowwwl.
Wow, what a voice!  Gotta go with a nine ...
I love this anyway....but it is perfect on this cold rainy day {#Umbrella}
I hear 'Burmashave' by Tom Waits...
sweet
..hey! that disc cover looks like it was Written in Chalk-!..starting w/a 7, but seems good to bump higher on add'l exposure..
I just had a moment and this song helped me sink in to it. Don't want it to be end...

Agreed totally! Love the song as well.
Is this a remake? Coulda sworn I've heard it before.
They nailed the mood on this one. Perfectly flawed voice. Excellent.
Outstanding. I heard Rickie Lee as well !

Yeah I think I'll use this song to teach my daughter the dangers of smoking.

Your not the odd one here, agree with the voice comment. bjesch wrote:

Um...that would be a muted trumpet.

I like it.
Smooth, sultry, melancholic - images of smokey subterranean bars with wasted guys sitting at round tables crying into their beer in the early hours of the morning. Sort of like that suicidal bar scene in Airplane. Lovely song, though, very evocative - 8 from the Nottingham jury.

Is she singing into a tin can?

Sounds like somethink Rickie Lee Jones would write/sing.

Ha! I had to look. I was about to write a 'Rickie' note. Very nice, though. Never heard of these two.

Ditto gatorade, DITTO!
If you get a chance, go see them LIVE.
You WON'T regret it!

Interesting, thought the trumpet sounded like Kami Lyle, and had to look it up to make sure.  I've always like her since Blue Cinderella (and saw that tour), but she doesn't seem to do much other than the occastiona studio work.

Wow. A perfect description of this lovely piece of music. I imagine myself sitting in a smoky, dark club at about two a.m., with this song playing...  What a great scenario for a story or a screenplay...

Wonderful song on a first listen. Why does it sound like it is recorded in a fish bowl?

Heard this for the first time earlier in the week.. Love it!  This is the best song on the album, however.  Despite the accolades for the album, this song stands alone.
I'm not much for faux naive art, but that cover illustration is just lovely.
sexeee....{#Kiss}

Very Nice.
2009 Americana Music Association awards Album of the Year. The song "Chalk" won the Song of the Year. Julie wrote, Buddy produced (mainly on headphones in a home studio while Julie was sleeping).

For our friends across the pond who tend to use the word "country" to describe the incredible variety of string music with folk and blues roots found throughout the Americas: these guys are about as country (from their genesis to their influences, recording apprenticeship, and contributing musicians) as it gets. Yes, it is wonderfully confusing.

very sexy...   love it!   {#Clap}
A hint of "Fade to Black"
Nice.

very smooth.  i love that voice.
Sultry.
