...in the background?  Sounds to me like Happy's singing most of the song; she has that super-low range that makes a lot of people think she's two singers.
Oh that was awful. Just awful. Please. Delete. It.

I always thought it was piss on baboons... still doesn't make any sense, but I'd expect baboons in the jungle more than dunes... or goons.
This is a great deal like the orignal, except without the cohesion and harmonies that made the older version good.

As with many songs on RP, especially covers, this is one that I wouldn't mind hearing once a year. I would never buy this to keep, but I like it that RP stretches my mind and ears a bit instead of sticking with the tried and true. On the other hand, RP also doesn't shy away from playing songs that may have been overdone on FM radio (Losing My Religion and Baba O'Riley, for example) but are nevertheless wonderful to hear in the context of deep album cuts and other rarities.

I agree with this comment 100% I'm not sure anyone ever could cover Peter Gabriel and do it justice. I guess my main problem with this cover is that it's not different ENOUGH from the original...
oh dear dear dear. Jeux sans frontieres indeed, et musique qui insulte les oreilles
Its awful to say, but this is awfully awful.

Will Happy Rhodes please stand up.......
There happy is. Over there, standing in the corner giving this version of the song a 10. I believe everyone has different taste and do my best to be respectful of other people's taste and not spout off when I do not like a song. However, I have a hard time believing anyone would give this version a 10 unless they were related to the artist(s).
I complained about another Peter/Kate cover lately, but this one is realy delightful and fresh. Still prefer the original, but nevertheless a fine performance. :sunny.gif:
Whistling tunes I hide my head in the dunes; the sand helps fill my ears. William Shatner should do a dramatic reading of this song... or maybe Stewie from "Family Guy" should...

The original was a great song but this cover takes what ever edges the original had and grinds them down into a flat surface. I agree with those who say some songs should be left alone unless they are in the hands of artists truely capable of improving it or adding their own spin to it. There are plenty of good but lesser known songs in the world. Leave the classics alone and resurrect one of them.

hmmm... when did barry manilow start doing this tune?
First off...it is an anit-war song -- for those confused Secondly...I have long been dumbstruck by those who insist on covering songs that they can't make better or even particularly different. This is a good example. Another example would be the insipid, inane, version of Big Yellow Taxi by Counting Crows. I mean...come on...why did you even bother?
Actually, This is the lowest rated song on RP.. purest example of garbage in the playlist(?). This song doesn't deserve the lowest possible rating, it takes effort to make good music and it takes even More effort to make bad music, This is just mediocre to an extreme, with about as much value as elevator music.
wow. i just heard the highest-rated song i've ever encountered on rp (a day in the life), and now, just a few minutes later, here's the LOWEST rated! coincidence? i think not. :propeller.gif: :propeller.gif: :propeller.gif:
Never 'got' the original and don't 'get' this cover. Pleasant enough, though.

From an Amazon.com review of "Many Worlds are Born Tonight" by Happy Rhodes: "Happy's trademark multi-octave voice (often compared to Kate Bush)"... so there you have it. Not Kate, but like Kate.

For years I thought they were saying "She's so funky, yeah." And I had taken several years worth of French classes, too. You'd think I'd have been able to translate the title of the song and figure it out, but no. I went straight to some crazy Rick James place.
Hmmm - what to say, what to say. Can't say it's great, but I always like to hear covers that do something different from the original. It always makes you listen with new ears, and that's always good. Thanks RP, for shaking things up a bit.
I heard an alternate version by Peter Gabriel himself (on a compilation CD of mood music) that was a lot like this one. But Mr. Gabriel still brought a lot more to the song than Bob Holroyd.
If you're going to cover a song, you should try to put a unique spin on it. This one fails at that.
Not worth the bandwidth
to borrow shamelessly, If songs could kill, this one probably will....
i think they nicked the bass line from the soundtrack to "Rain Man." i don't really have an opinion about this version of the song, but it is the first time i've been able to figure out what that little chorus (jeux sans frontieres) is... i had NO idea what peter gabriel was singing in the original, & i hate to admit what my brain came up with as a substitute! :D

The original song is great, the only thing this version has going for it is Happy Rhodes on the background vocals. How about some Happy Rhodes here on RP? She's a fabulous (and not very well known) artist.
"Happy Rhodes"? She has a name? And her own projects? THIS I gotta hear...
I almost gave this a 4, but then....no. Marginal at best. If you're going to cover a song, do it well. Holroyd has effectively neutered this song.

:fight.gif: not bad, I wouldn't run out and buy it. pretty brave to cover pg.
Pahleeeze !!!!
Brutal comments. The original album still sounds fairly fresh even though it's over 22 years old.

WHAT A BAD COVER! WHAT WOULD PETER GABRIEL SAY ABOUT THIS....?
Who cares? :P
i don't like peter gabriel, and generally avoid him, as he's a big DRM jerk. :P this song is a good cover - and it almost makes me want to hear the original. if a COVER can be this neat, the original must rule. i'm always partial to originals...
I liked it, It could also be Happy Rhodes in the background, she sounds a lot like Kate Bush. Now I wonder.
For some reason, it makes me want to kill myself this time around.
... there is just nothing i can say about this song that would do justice to how horribly bad it is...
Never heard this cover before. Not a bad job. I agree...Kate Bush sounds like she is in the background
why bother? sounds like they sampled PG and Kate Bush anyway.

Her name wasn't listed in the album credits at AMG but I'd swear she sounds just like her!!

yep. i agree. don't mind this at all.
Ick. :?
Very mellow. Better than the Massive Attack remix.
WHAT A BAD COVER! WHAT WOULD PETER GABRIEL SAY ABOUT THIS....?
huuumm .... I don't like it. Nice try but a bit risky.

Doesn't seem very different at all to me, apart from the deliberately/crassly different out of tune 'jeux sans frintiers' bit - Doesn't warrant another listen.
This is crap.
"we piss on the Dunes in the jungle" ? Is that Kate Bush in the background ?
Make it STOP!
Does anyone know who is doing the female French \"she\'s a porcupine ;) \" bit?
Hadn't heard of this artist, and didn't really think he'd done much to the song, so I figured I'd investigate. His website states: To call Bob Holroyd a ‘world' musician would be a mistake and would miss the point. While he does use instruments, voices and samples from all over the world, he is creating abstracted and almost utopian visions independent of the real world. Hope that clears things up for those of you who, like me, weren't sure why he made a long copy of the original.
i happen to love the original very much, but this version isn't all that bad. artists can do whatever they want to do when covering a song. it's up to the listener to either like it or not. what's the sense of copying a particular song if you don't make a few changes? sometimes, a cover can be better than the original. :whip:

Simply horrible. Some songs just don\'t need to be covered.
With so many bad songs in a row, it\'s like you want people to stop listening. At least it\'s not another Cracker song, but still a \'1\'.

Nope, according to AMG it's Happy Rhodes. I thought it sounded familiar. Happy Rhodes rules :).

Oh yeah - agreed. This is a great cover. Bob Holroyd made it his own - kinda funk-a-fide. Like it too! ....just goes to show ya taste is VERY subjective.....except mine which is perfect :p

Like this cover. Possibly more the original, though I\'ll be surprised if this is the consensus. I remember, early in college, several of us with ears to speakers arguing whether the chorus was \"She\'s so funky, yeah!\" or \"She\'s so popular.\" C\'etait avant que j\'aie appris le francais. We weren\'t alone: https://www.amiright.com/misheard/artist/gabrielpeter.shtml I don\'t know why we never came up with \"She\'s a porcupine.\"
Ho hum. No improvement over the original, and no interesting departure from it. I\'ll give \'em props for picking an interesting song to cover, though.
Feh. This is one tune that probably shouldn't be covered - don't like this. BTW, in terms of mis-heard lyrics, this one is a winner.. as someone posted on KissThisGuy, the chorus sounds like "she's so fuckin-A!". Even more here than on the Gabriel original.Archive of Misheard Lyrics
Isn\'t that Kate Bush in the background?
I would like this painful butchering to stop. Please. I normally like covers especially when they add something to the original, but this one hurts my ears.
And this adds what to the original?
I just caught a bit of this. I think I like it. I need to hear the whole thing again.
Not exactly Peter Gabriel - buts not too bad. :)
