Gone are the days when the ox fall down,
Take up the yoke and plow the fields around.
Gone are the days when the ladies said' "Please,
Gentle Jack Jones won't you come to me."

Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down,
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.

1920 when he stepped to the bar, drank to the dregs of the whiskey jar.
1930 when the wall caved in, he paved his way selling red-eyed gin.

Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down,
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.

Delilah Jones was the mother of twins,
Two times over and the rest were sins.
Raised eight boys, only I turned bad,
Didn't get the lickin's that the other ones had.

Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down,
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.

Tumble down shack in Big Foot country.
Snowed so hard that the roof caved in.
Delilah Jones went to meet her God,
And the old man never was the same again.

Daddy made whiskey and he made it well.
Cost two dollars and it burned like hell.
I cut hick'ry just to fire the still,
Drink down a bottle and be ready to kill.

Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down,
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.

And it looks like the old man's gettin' on.

Eye wateringly respectful to us Deadheads, and hopefully some newer folk too.

Dreadful is too strong for a decent tune you don't like.

Now that hurts - Cap't n' Tennille was the sountrack of my  girlfriend and I during  Jr. high

Couldn't agree more heartily. First bluegrass rendition I've heard. Did Jerry or the Dead cover this bluegrass style?
Terrific ending!!

I had to look that up. I figured Jerry and David Grisman certainly would of played it as they played a lot of Bluegrass together. I was blessed to see them once in Austin at a small venue, late 80's I'm guessing, I am sure they played it. (Awesome Show!)  But I found no recordings other than the GD.

Truer words have never been posted on RP!
This sounds like the same version that came out on 'Deadicated' in 1991 (!!)

Some really great covers of GD tunes: Los Lobos, Lyle Lovett, etc.

Great Song, love it!
Correction for the lyrics: fields, not fiends
Love this. Made me go buy it. My daughter loves it too.
What a song!!!  You won't hear this on the normal radio.

Great cover. Emory Joesph carries the flavor of Jerry's song with the bluegrass sound but the Hammond organ and his great vocal makes it a very original addition to a great song.
Keep up the great covers RP.

It's not the Dead but this is a outstanding cover!

Can't stand this in any version! Lyrics are just awful and repetitive. Please NEVER play it again. Please!!

Love me a good southern banjo, and some good guitar picks!!

You answered a question no one would ever have asked Alex Trebek
I'm getting so used to this version, I think I need to hear the original again.

Indeed.
Legacy songs will always spur fond memories regardless of the artist. Yet, very well played Mr. Emory.

This is a fine version of a most favorite Dead song.

I'd say this is the definitive version. Thanks to the Dead that he has the song to sing but thanks to him for making it so wonderful.
This sounds vaguely like Blue Rodeo.

Sounds fine by me.

Lacks the Dead's energy and urgency tho. A tad slow.

"Energy", "urgency"?!  Is the "Dead" you refer to The Grateful Dead?

Each to there own...I rather enjoy the pace of this. I like this a lot more than the dead version, tbh. And again, I never would have had the chance to say that if Bill hadn't put it on the playlist. Love RP.

This is a great cover. Possibly an improvement on the Dead.

Unless it was St Paddy's day, I would say he said "clean".
ohmygosh, this is a fantastic rendition! {#Yes}
I just bought this CD this week! They play this version of this song on KPIG with some regularity. Amazingly good.

Found myself snapping my fingers to this song, almost as if another force had taken over my arm.
Please play the Dead!
A fantastic story well told.
It's kinda like drinking an ale from Anheuser Busch.  Clean and still beer, but not the bended bitter ye crave
I was wondering why he plays this. It's not a strong work.

Sentimushal?  What a great word!  Not necessarily for this song, though - I LOVE this song.  I want to subscribe to the Businessgypsy Lexicon. Here's my contribution:  When you drop a dish of sauteed shrimp on the floor, you have a crustaceous mess.

Jerry was one of the great American folk song writers. This version is a little too country for me.

What a gift is the ability to take common experience and immortalize it in this fashion into music and verse.

A bit sentimushal for my taste, but what clean production!
I love this take on Robert Hunter's lyrics. It more the way I always imagined they should be played.
My favorite Dead song covered excellently. . .
Touche!

I always think this is Nickel Creek when it starts, maybe it's the mandolin. And the voice is similar too, but Mr. Joseph's has more 'depth'.

When I see it's Emory Joseph covering The Dead, I understand why I like it so much. This is really wonderful.
